Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tomo Colorado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tomo, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through travel, little by little, with every trip we took as a family. The more we explored, the more I realized how meaningful travel can be. It’s not just about seeing beautiful places. It’s about learning, growing, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
I wanted to show people that you don’t need a perfect plan or a big budget to enjoy travel. There are so many ways to explore, connect, and make everyday moments feel special. I truly believe that memories are one of the best gifts we can give our children. They build confidence, bring joy, and become a source of strength when life gets hard.
Through our adventures, I learned that life is full of possibilities. You can dream big and take small steps to make it happen. That’s the heart of my blog is encouraging families to explore more, worry less, and enjoy this beautiful journey together.
I hope my stories continue to inspire others to get outside, make memories, and find happiness in the simple joy of traveling together.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hi! I’m Tomo, a travel blogger, mom of two boys, and the creator of Tomo Travel & Camping. I share stories and tips based on our real-life adventures as a family exploring the U.S. and beyond. Everything I write comes from our firsthand experience, from the wins to the mishaps, because I want to help make travel feel more approachable and doable for other families.
My goal is to take the guesswork out of planning, especially for moms who want to travel more but don’t know where to start. I offer practical guides, honest reviews, and personal insights so families can spend less time stressing and more time making memories together. Whether it’s camping under the stars, road tripping through National Parks, or navigating a Disney Cruise, I love showing that it’s possible to create joyful, lasting moments without needing perfection.
For me, travel is a way to raise kids who are curious, open-minded, and confident. I want my boys to grow up knowing how big and beautiful the world is, and I hope other families find that same sense of wonder through my blog.
Right now, I am continuing to grow Tomo Travel & Camping with the hope of helping even more families take that first step toward adventure. Hearing from readers who say my blog made their trip easier or inspired them to go somewhere new is what keeps me going and reminds me why I started in the first place.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Empathy and Cultural Sensitivity
My blog supports both Japanese-speaking families and English-speaking families, many of whom are navigating travel in a foreign language or culture. Understanding what these families need, especially those traveling with young kids, has helped me write content that feels genuinely helpful.
Advice: Start by truly understanding your audience. Don’t just post, connect with them. Ask followers what they want to know. Start real conversations through comments, polls, and messages. Engage actively on social media, and listen closely to the people you want to support. The more you understand their questions, struggles, and dreams, the more helpful and relatable your content will be. It’s not just about growing followers, it’s about building a community where people feel seen, heard, and inspired to explore more and enjoy life more fully.
2. Consistency and Patience
Whether it’s writing bilingual posts or publishing detailed reviews on lesser-known destinations, it takes time to see results. Some posts rank quickly; others take months. But staying consistent and continuing to create helpful content has made all the difference. Even if progress feels slow at first, your efforts will build momentum over time. Just keep going, you’re planting seeds that will grow.
Advice: Along with being consistent, give yourself permission to experiment. Try different formats, topics, or storytelling styles to see what resonates most with your audience. Pay attention to the feedback you get through comments or messages, and let that guide your growth. You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. Progress often comes from learning as you go and staying open to change. Celebrate small wins, and remember that each post is a step forward.
Also, don’t be afraid to invest in yourself. Taking a course or workshop can save you hours of trial and error and give you the confidence to keep going. Learning from others who’ve been through the process can be incredibly motivating. And if you’re not ready to spend money yet, YouTube is packed with free tutorials that can teach you everything from blogging basics to video editing and social media growth. There’s always something new to learn, and the more you grow, the better you’ll be able to support and inspire your community.
3. Tips with Personal Experience
One thing that makes your work stand out is the way you balance between personal experience (like your own Disney Cruise experiences) and including enough helpful tips. This makes the blog relatable and useful.
Advice: When you write, picture yourself helping a friend plan their next adventure. Share your personal stories, but always tie them back to practical takeaways your reader can use. Whether it’s a helpful tip, a resource, or a lesson learned, this approach makes your content feel personal, trustworthy, and truly useful.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Definitely my husband! He’s not just my best friend, but also my biggest supporter and mentor. I’ve had many ups and downs along the way, but he’s always believed in me, even during the times I doubted myself. His encouragement has helped me keep going, try new things, and step outside of my comfort zone.
Building a blog and running everything behind the scenes, from website setup to social media and content planning, has come with a lot of technical challenges. Thankfully, my husband actually enjoys that part. He handles the tech side of things, while I focus on the creative. We balance each other out and make a great team.
Looking back, I think one of the reasons his support has meant so much is because of how I grew up. I was raised in Japan during a time when there was a lot of pressure to be perfect. I wasn’t used to being praised, and for a long time, I felt like I was never quite good enough. It wasn’t about being negative, I just didn’t know it was okay to try, to make mistakes, and to grow from them. My husband helped shift that mindset. He showed me that life isn’t just about meeting expectations. It is also about joy, growth, and discovering what’s possible.
Deep down, I’ve always been curious, social, and full of ideas. But for a long time, I didn’t have the confidence to act on them. With his support, I’ve slowly rebuilt my self-esteem and started to truly believe in my own voice. I’m so grateful to be on this journey with someone who helps me dream bigger, face challenges, and keep leaning along the way.
