Meet Tong Wang

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tong Wang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Tong, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My purpose comes from my love of creation and my exploration of marvelous things and profound emotions. Initially, I simply enjoyed the process of painting, immersing myself in the world of colors and lines. Over time, I gradually discovered that whenever I picked up my brush, I could enter a world uniquely my own. In this world, I can bring to life on the canvas the fantastical and emotional scenes from my mind.
By constructing these wondrous worlds, I can convey deep emotions such as desire, fragmentation, and destruction, while also showcasing genuine and pure beauty. Through my paintings, I aim to resonate with the audience, allowing them to experience the stories and emotions hidden within the colors and lines.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I read a quote in a book: “When you have the passion to do something, just do it. When you hesitate, it means it won’t work.” When I let go of my burdens and rediscovered the original intention and ideas I had for creating art, I felt incredibly light and free.

I love nature, ruins, exploration, and mysterious things. I believe that each of my paintings contains a unique world, and I want to incorporate what I find fascinating into them: humans, monsters, demons, angels, and fairies, as well as desire, fragmentation, destruction, the joys and sorrows of life, and the most genuine and pure emotions.

I strive to break traditional painting conventions by combining sculpture and canvas in my creations. Each creation and exploration brings new progress and surprises, which makes me incredibly excited.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe that paying close attention to life and society and noticing the small details often overlooked in our daily routines, can provide valuable ideas for creation. Additionally, reading books in fields that interest you can greatly support your creative process. Lastly, addressing any skill deficiencies in your work is also crucial.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

I believe that sculpture is an important direction in my creative work. In my past creations, I experimented with incorporating materials like resin into my paintings, but the results were never entirely satisfying. Over the past few months, I have started to combine various materials and incorporate sculpture elements into my work. Gradually, I feel that I have found a unique style and expression. Through continuous experimentation and exploration, my work has shown significant improvement in both material use and expressive depth. I have discovered that integrating sculptural techniques not only enriches the layers of my but also enhances the depth of artistic expression. I am increasingly satisfied with my progress in this area and look forward to continuing to explore more possibilities along this path.
