Meet toni newman

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Toni Newman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Toni below.

Hi Toni, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I understand my value and the unique perspectives I bring to the table. I have confidence in my skills to collaborate and my self-awareness about my strengths and weaknesses. As a black trans woman who has been a 3-time CEO, I have been the only one in several rooms. Networking and building alliances are crucial to me in fighting for equity for all regardless of race, sex, and gender. Understanding and appreciating cultural differences helps me navigate diverse environments more effectively. This involves me learning about the cultures and backgrounds of my colleagues and finding common ground. Clear and assertive communication is key for me. I express my ideas confidently and I listen actively to others. Being the only one in the room can be mentally and emotionally taxing. I prioritize self-care and find ways to recharge, whether through hobbies, exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am best known for my memoir, “I Rise: The Transformation of Toni Newman.” In this book, chronicles my journey from growing up as a boy in North Carolina to becoming a transgender woman. The memoir provides an intimate look at my struggles and triumphs, offering insights into the transgender experience and advocating for greater understanding and acceptance. I am an ardent advocate for transgender rights and broader LGBTQ+ issues. I work extensively to raise awareness about the challenges faced by transgender individuals, particularly in areas such as healthcare, employment, and social acceptance.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three qualities that have helped my journey are communication, open mind, and self-control. First, be prepared for your subject, be open to new ideas, and be able to listen to others. I am a collaborator and strive to be a good listener. Collaboration and listening are the best 2 skills I possess.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

The poem I Rise by the late Dr. Maya Angelou (former Wake Forest University Reynolds Professor) has inspired me to be my authentic self. As a student at Wake Forest University, I met Dr. Angelou and began to read her works. My memoir I Rise-The Transformation of Toni Newman was inspired by the poem I Rise.
