Meet Toni Porter

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Toni Porter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Toni, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience often comes from the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. In the candle industry, trends, customer preferences, and market conditions can change, so being open to adaptation and innovation is crucial. Having a clear and well-defined vision for my business provides me with a sense of purpose and direction. I like to stay informed about the latest developments in the candle industry, including new techniques, materials, and design trends. The more knowledge and skills I have, the better equipped I am to overcome obstacles.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of Toni’s Collection which specializes in home fragrance products that are handcrafted, eco-friendly, and triple scented! I am taking an innovative approach with fragrance. My goal is to transform your environment, by creating an experience through smell. Ive added different elements and complimenting products that can be used anywhere. Ive also incorporated candle making sessions for my customers called Sip & Scents. Which is perfect for date nights, girls night activity, or a kids crafting session.

I have built my business on the idea that fragrance can provide comfort and enrich people’s lives. I consider it a privilege to be a part of creating new memories and making special moments even more special with true-to-life fragrance. Enjoyed throughout the US, our fragrances are the universal thread that keeps all of us connected and inspired.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, adaptability, and good communication skills are 3 great qualities to have. Resilience is my ability to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to challenges. To develop this quality, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, set realistic expectations, and focus on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Seek inspiration from stories of successful individuals who faced adversity.

In a rapidly changing world, adaptability is crucial. Cultivate a growth mindset, be open to new ideas, and embrace change as an opportunity for growth. Continuously update your skills and stay informed about industry trends. Effective communication is essential in both personal and professional life. Practice active listening, learn to articulate your thoughts clearly, and work on your written and verbal communication skills. Seek feedback from peers or mentors to improve your communication abilities.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I step away from my work or the situation briefly. This can help you gain perspective and reduce stress. I create to-do lists and prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency. I like to focus on completing high-priority items first. Divide complex or overwhelming projects into smaller, more manageable tasks. This can make the work feel less daunting. I talk to mentors, colleagues, or friends who can provide advice, lend an empathetic ear, or share their own experiences with managing overwhelm. Last but not least, recognize and celebrate your achievements, even if they seem small. Positive reinforcement can boost motivation and reduce feelings of overwhelm.
