We were lucky to catch up with Tonoso recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tonoso, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
I don’t really believe in writers block. I think it is often used as an excuse. The main thing though is to keep grinding and keep throwing ideas at the wall until you discover something that works. It is true that some days will be more inspired than others, but when you have a deadline to hit you just have to suck it up and plow on through. There is an endless amount of inspiration around if you look for it. You can draw inspiration from anything whether it’s a great novel, an thrilling opera, an impressionistic painting, or a scenic hike. I do think that living a healthy lifestyle, and having a morning routine can be a big help. Sometimes just getting the day started off well can be all you need.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Tonoso is the Los Angeles based live-electronic duo of Jacob Grabb and Paul Salerno. They met in high school jazz band and began making music together in 2018. The duo released their debut Album “Artificial Dreams” in 2022. Their music can be heard in various mediums including the award winning film “Summertime” and the hit video game “Cyberpunk 2077.” Jacob’s percussion and vocal ability, paired with Paul’s guitar and film composing sensibilities, create a refreshing perspective on modern dance music.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Uniqueness, curiosity, consistency. I think that you need do have a constant desire to learn and grow. Constantly picking up new skills, but as with anything if you aren’t consistent you won’t experience much growth.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Since we finished our album last year, we have been focusing on collaborations. We are about to release an EP with two different rappers FnGHaze and Face Value and we have other collaborations we are finishing up with other artists. We are mainly looking to collaborate with singers/rappers but are always open to a collaboration as long as the vibe is right.
