We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tony Bichai. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tony below.
Hi Tony , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
How I found my purpose has always been rooted in family, faith, and the example set before me. My father immigrated from Aswan, Egypt, and through hard work and perseverance became a successful pharmacist, opening five independent pharmacies. Together with my mother, who immigrated from Cairo at a younger age, was well-educated, and equally driven, they built an incredible life for me and my two siblings here in Southern California. They gave us the best opportunities – schools, experiences, and values showing us firsthand what sacrifice, dedication, and vision can create.
Their journey instilled in me a drive for excellence. Whenever I face difficulties in work or in life, I reflect on the sacrifices they made and the faith that fueled them. Growing up in the Coptic Orthodox faith taught me that faith isn’t separate from work or daily life but rather something we live by in how we treat others, in striving to serve, and in trusting that rewards follow when we lead with kindness and integrity.
Losing my mother in 2023 made this even more personal. She was selfless, kind, and calm even in the face of adversity. Her strength and peace in difficult times left a permanent mark on me. It reminded me that purpose is not only about success or achievement, but about how we show up for others.
For me, my purpose is to carry those lessons forward: to be good to people, to run a business with integrity, to deliver quality work and service, and to create experiences where clients feel happy, supported, and grateful. There is no greater reward than a client’s words of appreciation, because it means I’ve honored the values my parents instilled in me. That is my purpose.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What excites me most about my work is the joy of building for people. Whether it’s someone’s home or a business they rely on for their livelihood, construction is more than putting structures together. It’s about creating spaces that allow people to live, grow, and thrive. I take great pride in knowing that what we build becomes part of someone’s story, whether that’s a family gathering in a new home or a business opening its doors to serve its community.
That sense of purpose fuels my passion every day. I’ve learned that staying true to who I am, keeping my emotions in check, and being present for others makes all the difference. My role isn’t just about managing a project, it’s about being a steady hand that clients can rely on through what is often one of the biggest investments of their lives.
Our brand, Bichai Construction Corporation, reflects my family heritage and values. Carrying our last name into the business means everything to me. It represents integrity, hard work, and quality passed down from one generation to the next. We specialize in both commercial and residential projects, and our focus is always on delivering a well-rounded, high-quality product with unmatched service. Looking ahead, our goal is to continue growing in both sectors, building not just structures but lasting relationships, trust, and impact in the communities we serve.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three things stand out as the most impactful in my journey:
First, experience and patience. Over more than 13 years in construction, I’ve seen how valuable it is to take the time to learn before rushing to build your own business. My advice to those early in their journey is to embrace the process, work for larger companies, deal with difficult projects, and gather as much knowledge as you can. Those hard-earned lessons prepare you in ways no shortcut ever could.
Second, calmness under pressure. Construction is a high-stress industry with deadlines, budgets, and unexpected hurdles are constant. Being able to stay poised and level-headed is what keeps projects moving and people united. For someone starting out, practice this daily: learn to pause, evaluate, and respond rather than react.
Third, critical thinking and adaptability. No project ever goes exactly to plan. There will always be unforeseens and challenges. The best contractors can problem-solve quickly while staying flexible. My advice here is to train yourself to look at problems from multiple angles, and don’t be afraid to lean on mentors or teammates for perspective.
Patience, calm leadership, and critical thinking are qualities that take time to develop, but they are also the foundation for building a lasting career.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We’re always open to collaborating with others in the industry. Construction is such a team driven field, and some of the best results I’ve seen come from working side by side with like-minded subcontractors or even fellow general contractors. When everyone shares the same values and work ethic, it’s incredible to see how much more can be accomplished, whether it’s in project management from the office or execution out in the field.
At the end of the day, we are nothing without our trades. The skilled labor and trusted relationships we’ve built over time are what make growth possible, and we’re always looking to welcome more quality people into that circle.
