Meet Tony Ford

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tony Ford a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tony , so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

Writing everyday is nearly impossible for me so I feel the need to always have a pen and paper within reaching distance. Having notepads scattered throughout the house and at other places that I spend a majority of time (car, work, etc.) ensures that less ideas are lost and that I have something tangible to revisit in the future when inspiration feels thin. Going back through old notepads had yielded songs, stories, titles, characters, plot twists, lyrics, lines and even band names for me in the past. I recently wrote a song titled “Simple Truths” that I will be recording with my band The New Guys this Summer. When I finished the music and chorus for the song I was so happy with what I had that I was a little intimidated to try to write lyrics that were of the same quality of the melody and music I’d put together. Flipping through an old song/idea pad I found a half finished poem/song that I tweaked to fill in the melody and found that they were a perfect fit. The original set of lines/lyrics where over a decade old and somehow seemed to fit perfect with the new chorus I’d written. A great reason to never throw out your old writing!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a songwriter/performer that has been writing and releasing original material for almost 20 years. Over that time I’ve written and performed with some incredible artists including The New Guys, Wagner Ford, The Cedar Shakers, Joe Savidge, The SawTones, WillowRoad, The LongShots, The Fords & Planet Waves. Currently looking forward to releasing my next single “Easy to Forget” on June 21st as well as new releases from The New Guys, The Cedar Shakers and a solo vinyl LP all expected to be out in 2024.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Patience

2. Optimism

3. Organization

All groups/bands need at least one person who has these things, if you can do all three you will always find a home amongst musicians and you will always be useful in a band setting regardless of ability.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m always looking to improve my harmonica playing and would be honored to be considered by anyone for recording or live performances. Reaching out through linktr.ee, gmail, instagram or faceboook are all easy ways to contact me.
