Meet Tony M Fountain

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tony M Fountain. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tony M below.

Hi Tony M, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?

Sometimes, the space you create can become so familiar that it stifles your imagination. When I go for a car ride or travel new roads, I usually come up with my best lyrics or thoughts about a blog post versus sitting in front of a laptop.

Engaging in a different creative activity also helps, and I have to thank my wife for showing me this. On one of our first dates, she took me painting, and I was immediately inspired afterward.

Collaboration with others is another key. I recently did a song with pop singer Nate Setto, and it was a dance track, which is something I’m not used to. Also, the story concept was foreign, and it motivated me to explore uncharted territories and come up with something very creative that I would have never done on my own.

Inspiration often comes from the world around me as well. I typically have always watched and listened more than I talk.

Nature Walks would be my last suggestion. I used to walk through the woods a lot as a child, and now that I’m grown and live down a dirt road back in the woods, I’ve noticed my teenage son doing the same and coming back with all kinds of random thoughts. Sometimes, it’s good to just be alone in nature and away from all the noise pollution to gain clarity.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

We work with artists and entrepreneurs to help them with branding, marketing, and SEO. I am also a recording artist, and so unlike some other platforms, we are predominantly artists-run.

We’ve also had the pleasure of collaborating with big brands like, most recently, we worked with Disney on Ice.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

You learn more from trying things and failing than discussing ideas you haven’t attempted to execute. I’m not one to easily give up. I can’t say it’s always been that way, though. I used to be good at many things but tended not to see things through to the finish. One day, I decided to move differently and become more involved in whatever I chose to pursue. I’ve faced a lot of adversity along the way. I’ve heard many no’s or no replies, but I didn’t let it stop me. You must develop unwavering faith in your journey, even when things seem to be going nowhere. As long as you’re not turning circles, then progress is progress; no matter how small, just keep going.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

I personally think it’s best to learn as much as possible about the field you’re in. Even if it’s not the central part of what you do, it can help you understand the process, which can be very valuable. For example, I’m not a music engineer, photo editor, web designer, PR agent, or artist manager. But I’ve learned some about all these things and more, which has helped me tremendously.

Before gaining knowledge and experience in some of these fields, I was overcharged, and the turnaround time wasn’t always met. For instance, now that I know what it takes to design a website or flyer, I can pass these things off to others with more experience who can complete them more quickly and with better quality. This frees me up to handle other things, and I also have the words to explain what I need better and can ask for it to be completed at a reasonable price and timeframe.
