We recently connected with Tony Rodini and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Tony with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Being in such a competitive industry makes me want to work harder and smarter than the previous day. I feel as if most people think that entertainment industry folks, at least us on the creative side, are a bit crazy because we don’t have a fixed salary like a conventional job. But the way I look at it is that I’d rather take risks and bet on myself then to have a ceiling in what I can earn and what I can accomplish in my career. One song can change everything- so with that in mind, I stick to an incredibly disciplined routine so that I can keep perfecting my craft every day. Songwriting is just like a muscle, and the more you’re writing with new people the more you’re strengthening your ability to create the best art possible. This all leads to my work ethic and drive.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a music producer/songwriter, and I’ve been very fortunate to work with amazing artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Blackbear, Terror Jr, and Grammy-nominated songwriters like Marty James, Lauren Christy, Bonnie McKee, and many others. I’ve always been into doing what I do- but when I moved out to LA ten or so years ago, I stepped it up to a new level. I’m surrounded by so many talented and driven people. That makes life exciting because it’s easy to get motivated and inspired. I was in a publishing deal with a major music company for the past 8 years, and recently I decided to leave that company, and venture out on my own for new opportunities completely independent. I’m even more motivated than ever to be able to control and collect 100% of my publishing earnings.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were most impactful were preparation, consistency, and having a sense of perspective. It’s important to remember where you started and recognize how far you’ve come. Living in the heart of where music is created makes it important to always be prepared because you never know what opportunities can come your way at any given moment.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My entertainment attorney is one of the most supportive people in my career. He champions me and keeps me motivated all while keeping me safe from a business standpoint. He’s been rockin’ with me since day one. We’ve done many deals together, and I learn from him all the time because the music industry is ALWAYS evolving. What I respect most about him is that he gives me the time, and attention that I need even though he has bigger clients. But he knows that I’ll soon be one of his biggest.
