We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Torri Burrell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Torri below.
Torri , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by trying new things and continuously trying to improve my skillset in every way possible. With cakes, I try to keep up with the different trends and designs as much as possible to create challenges for myself while learning. I also love doing other creative activities such as painting, crocheting, and writing so I have many ways I express myself through my creativity to keep it alive.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
K’Tor Étair is a cake company. I specialize in custom cakes such as weddings, birthdays, baby showers, etc. I also offer party trays/boxes, cupcakes, and other tasty pastries. While I’ve been running my small business from my home bakery, I opened a pastry truck recently I am now selling my baked goods on the go and participating in many different events. I attended Temple University where I was previously interviewed a few years ago and I told them my goal was to open a pastry truck and I am so proud to finally have made that happen. My main goal for my business and my customers overall is to exceed expectations in every way possible. I always aim to make my customers as happy as possible not only with their orders but with my customer service as well.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey would be my dedication to learning, I got a job at a bakery when I first started doing cakes to improve my skills, and my number one goal there was to learn as much as possible. I am a fast learner but it also took a lot of patience to overcome the harder techniques and skills needed for the job but I always stayed positive which has helped me throughout my journey overall. Lastly, knowing when to say no and when to take a break has been the one thing keeping me going. Running a business by yourself can really be a lot of work especially the more the business grows of course. I think it is so important when to know to choose your mental and physical health over a to-do list. A little advice I have for folks who are early in their journey is to simply be patient and graceful with/ toward themselves, as nothing happens overnight and everything falls into place when the right time presents itself.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me was believe in me and support me in everything I do. No matter what I do/achieve in life my parents have always been my biggest fans/supporters. I’ve tried selling many other items before I fell in love with cake decorating and for every little business idea I started, they were there by my side ready to assist in any way possible. They’ve helped me every step of the way with getting my pastry truck and continuing to grow my small business.
