Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tory Keit. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tory, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
As an author, I’ve come to view critics and naysayers not as adversaries but as essential companions on the path to success. Their presence is a testament to the impact and reach of my work. Far from being mere obstacles, these voices provide invaluable perspectives that challenge me to refine my craft.
I approach criticism with the mindset that each comment and feedback piece is a stepping stone towards excellence. It’s crucial to remember that behind every critique, there’s often a desire to see you succeed and to push you towards a higher standard. This realization has transformed how I receive feedback, turning what could be perceived as unfavorable into a constructive force for growth.
Every writer needs a mirror to reflect the strengths and weaknesses of their work. Critics, in their diverse opinions, provide that mirror. They compel us to look deeper, to question, and to evolve. In this process of introspection and improvement, true writing mastery is found.
Therefore, I don’t just tolerate the critics and naysayers; I welcome them. They are the unsung catalysts in my journey, urging me to surpass my previous best. By embracing their feedback with an open heart and a keen mind, I continually sculpt my writing into something more profound and resonant. In this way, every criticism becomes a valuable chapter in my ongoing story as an author.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
On my journey, three essential qualities have been pivotal: resilience, empathy, and a continuous thirst for knowledge. These elements have shaped my path as an author and community leader and have also been instrumental in navigating the challenges and opportunities that have come my way.
Resilience: This journey has its challenges. For instance, Overcoming the pandemic’s challenges required a significant pivot in how I connected with my audience and community. Resilience is about adapting to change, persisting through setbacks, and seeing failures as stepping stones rather than roadblocks. For those starting, I advise embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Develop a mindset that views obstacles as essential components of success.
Empathy: As a writer, empathy has been crucial in creating relatable and impactful narratives. It’s about understanding and connecting with the experiences and emotions of others. In community work, empathy drives the ability to identify and respond to the needs of others effectively. For newcomers, cultivating empathy involves active listening, openness to diverse perspectives, and a genuine desire to understand and connect with others.
Continuous Learning: The literary and community engagement fields are ever-evolving. Staying informed and continually learning has been essential for growth and relevance. Whether it’s honing writing skills, staying abreast of community needs, or understanding the latest trends in non-profit management, a commitment to lifelong learning has been vital. For those beginning their careers, seek mentors, engage in professional development opportunities, and remain curious and open to new ideas.
For anyone early in their journey, focus on building these qualities. Cultivate resilience by setting and pursuing goals despite setbacks, develop empathy by engaging with diverse communities and narratives, and commit to continuous learning through reading, courses, and mentorship. These pillars will not only support your professional growth but will also enrich your personal development.

Her keen eye and intuitive understanding of my audience have been instrumental in shaping narratives that genuinely connect with readers. Laquosha’s involvement ensures that every piece I create is not just a reflection of my voice but also resonates with the hearts and minds of my audience.
In his role as my most candid critic, Brandon Gates has provided a reality check with every publication. His candid feedback acts as a whetstone, sharpening my writing and preparing me for the diverse reactions of the literary world. This honest critique is a treasure for any writer; it pushes one to strive for excellence and authenticity. Brandon’s insights have honed my storytelling, ensuring each book meets and exceeds reader expectations.
Shantay Reaze has been the lighthouse in my professional growth. Beyond just support, she offers astute feedback and innovative marketing strategies that have significantly enhanced my presence in the literary world. Shantay’s blend of honest appraisal and creative marketing insight has expanded my reach and impact as an author. Her guidance has been pivotal in navigating the business side of writing, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth and broader audience engagement.
