Meet Tosinger T

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tosinger T. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tosinger below.

Tosinger, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I believe uninhibited creativity is embedded in childlike playfulness. Age doesn’t stop me from finding time to get down on the floor, roll and play, laugh, dance, daydream and wonder, some of my best ideas have emerged from wild imaginations. I also love nature. I spend time in nature and listen to the sounds of the birds or watch the flowers bloom, watch the sun rise and watch it set, look at the moon and the stars in the sky. Nature’s rhythms keep me alive. I am in tune with everything living.
I also surround myself with great energy, other creatives, babies and children, the elderly, human beings with positive vibes and good music of different, eclectic genres. I surround myself with other musicians, attend creative events, concerts, plays, art exhibitions, read stories, follow wholesome social media accounts, watch good movies and find time for meditation, rest and relaxation.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Tosinger, a singer, songwriter, and storyteller from Nigeria based currently in Atlanta. I am passionate about preserving and promoting African culture, particularly in the diaspora. I am a cultural ambassador who is very proud of her African heritage. I share daily yoruba proverbs and sayings to showcase the linguistic beauty of the Yoruba language and also impart the wisdom embedded in these proverbs, connecting my audience to cultural heritage and values. These are on my tiktok and recently hosted on the Genti Audio app. I also love to share African folklore on my youtube channel “Tales With Tosinger” and in person at events and festivals.I have written a children’s short story book “Seven Afrofolk Tales in Seven Days” which is available on Amazon .

My music is inspirational and my style is soulful, folksy and/or ambient. My voice has been described as soothing. I incorporate traditional Yoruba lyrics on a contemporary musical platform. Singing in Yoruba language for me, not only adds a rich cultural layer to my music but also serves as a means of keeping the linguistic and cultural traditions alive for posterity’s sake.
I have released a couple of albums and my latest single is titled “Suuru (Patience)” which is available on all streaming platforms.
I am also an actress, an event curator and an On Air Personality, I have acted in films and musical theatre. I co-host the ‘African Experience Worldwide show’ (Linkages) on WRFG 89.3 FM Atlanta and host “Diaspora Talks with Tosinger” on Afrovibes TV.

I love eclectic music and instruments. I play the acoustic guitar and the talking drum and can find my way around the lap steel (Hawaiian guitar) which I learned during the pandemic.
I believe I have a divine calling to heal, uplift and promote rare musical and artistic talents.
Presently, I am tapping into the healing nature of my gifts and essence to branch into the wellness sector. My interest in spiritual and mental well-being (of artists in particular) not only reflects a holistic approach to life but also provides an opportunity to explore the intersection between arts & culture, and global, human health.

As an actress, my ability to convey stories through various mediums showcases my versatility as an artist. Whether through spoken word, song, or on the stage and screen, I have the talent to captivate audiences and share the vibrancy of authentic African narratives.

Overall, my creative journey is a compelling tapestry that weaves together music, culture, language, storytelling, theatre, film, and wellness. By embracing and celebrating my multifaceted identity, I am not only contributing to a wide cultural landscape but also inspiring others to appreciate the richness of African heritage and culture in all its forms.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Skill Communication/Interpersonal Skills, Human Connections – I can’t underestimate the power of building meaningful relationships. Most of the gigs I get today were a result of connections I made in different spaces because I approached and was approachable. The people you meet along your journey have a great impact on where you are going. Your character and social skills will determine the opportunities that will be presented to you. Be a person of integrity and great character with great communication skills so that your name can be mentioned in rooms, positively. Stay humble as you grow, while building and maintaining professional networks, making meaningful connections that provide community, support, and a sense of belonging. Don’t forget to give back to others as you receive. Pass it on.

Area of Knowledge
Technology and Digital Media – Keep Learning – Technology is always changing so we have to keep up. We have to be aware of what’s new with how music is being consumed digitally for example. Staying curious and maintaining a hunger for learning allows artists to explore new approaches. We have to keep learning about how to maximise our content on social media. Content is a primary source of entertainment. From movies and TV shows to music, podcasts, and social media, different ways of presenting content and tech is always evolving, so one has to be on top of it by staying informed. Thankfully, we have youtube and google university 🙂
Qualities
Patience and Resilience: Success in the arts often involves facing rejection, setbacks, or periods of slow progress. As an actress, I audition all the time and get rejected. It takes only a door to open to set off a career so one has to develop a thick skin in this industry. SAG-AFTRA was recently on strike and there was no work for a season. We have to be able to adapt to circumstances, to the ebb and flow of life, this is the nature of the industry. One has to be versatile and multifaceted, when one aspect is down, you can pick another up. When I was not acting during this period, I pursued more music gigs while patiently waiting.
Consistency is Key – Consistency requires discipline. The act of showing up regularly, whether it’s for work, practice, or any other commitment is important. Being consistent has definitely been a quality that has been impactful in my journey. Building a habit of consistent daily actions help establish and reinforce positive habits, strengthen discipline and work ethic. Something as little as posting on my instagram stories daily goes a long way. Whether it’s practising an instrument, writing new lyrics, jamming with music friends, doing something related to your skill/talent daily pays off. My achievements may not be on a large scale yet but they are little drops of water that will one day make a mighty ocean. So, my advice to people earlier in their journey is to keep doing what they love and dedicate time to it daily no matter how small. Many long-term successes are the result of sustained, consistent effort.
