We were lucky to catch up with Toska Smith Washington recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Toska, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
My confidence and self-esteem were built through experience. I’ve been through a lot in life—challenges, setbacks, and situations that tested me. But each obstacle taught me something valuable and pushed me to grow stronger. Over time, I learned to trust myself and my ability to overcome whatever came my way.
Another big part of it was the doubt I faced from others. So many people told me I couldn’t do it, and instead of letting that break me, I used it as motivation. Every “no” or “you’re not good enough” just made me want to go harder. It fueled my drive to prove not just to them, but to myself, that I was capable of achieving more. That determination, combined with my lived experiences, is what helped shape the confidence I carry today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
About Me & What I Do
My name is Toska Smith, and I’m the founder and CEO of Elite Fleet Drivers Organization. With over 15 years of experience in the transportation and logistics industry, my journey has taken me from behind the wheel as a driver to running operations as a broker agent, co-owner operator, and now a logistics entrepreneur.
Elite Fleet Drivers is a hub designed to support, train, and empower independent drivers and owner-operators—whether they’re running box trucks, sprinter vans, semis, or power-only units.
We provide:
Education & Training – including self-paced modules, guest speakers, and real-world insights.
Business Support – from securing loads and navigating carrier agreements to ensuring compliance and operational efficiency.
Community & Mentorship – connecting drivers with industry experts, mentors, and a supportive peer network.
Opportunities – access to dispatch services, job leads, dedicated lanes, and more.
What sets us apart is our mission: we don’t just dispatch loads—we empower drivers to take ownership of their business and succeed long-term. I stay actively involved in the field to keep my perspective grounded in the day-to-day realities of the drivers we serve.
What Makes It Special
What excites me most is seeing lives change. Watching someone come into this industry unsure of where to start—and then grow into a confident, informed, and profitable business owner—is incredibly rewarding.
Our organization exists to fill a gap. Many new drivers and owner-operators lack access to the practical, experience-based knowledge they need to succeed. We offer that in a relatable and accessible way.
We’re also building a true community—a space where drivers can ask questions, share insights, and support one another. That culture of encouragement and accountability is something I’m really proud of.
What’s New & What’s Ahead
Earlier this year, we officially launched Elite Fleet Drivers Organization as a centralized resource for logistics professionals who want to level up their business. The feedback has been incredible, and we’re continuing to expand our offerings—from compliance support and dispatching services to mentorship programs and strategic growth sessions.
Our vision is bigger than just operations—it’s about creating a movement in the industry. One where drivers are equipped with the tools, confidence, and connections to not just survive, but to thrive.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful areas in my journey were:
Resilience
This industry—and entrepreneurship in general—is full of challenges, setbacks, and moments where giving up seems easier than pushing forward. Resilience is what kept me going. I didn’t let “no” stop me. I used every obstacle as fuel. For anyone starting out: understand that tough times are part of the process. Build your mindset to withstand the storms. Journal your progress, celebrate small wins, and remind yourself why you started.
Willingness to Learn
I never assumed I knew everything, even with years of experience. I constantly asked questions, studied the industry, listened to others, and learned from my own mistakes. If you’re just starting out, stay curious. Read, take courses, watch videos, attend webinars—whatever it takes. The more you know, the more confidently and effectively you can move.
Resourcefulness
I didn’t always have access to the best tools, money, or connections—but I learned how to make the most of what I did have. Whether it was finding loads, solving problems on the road, or figuring out paperwork, I made it work. My advice: don’t wait for perfect conditions. Start where you are, use what’s available, and be creative in how you grow your business.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes — I’m always open to connecting and collaborating with others in the logistics and transportation space. I believe that strong partnerships and shared knowledge are key to growing not just individual businesses, but the industry as a whole.
I’m especially interested in collaborating with:
Logistics professionals who want to network, share insights, or work together on educational initiatives, events, or industry solutions.
Independent Logistics Management Specialists who are looking to work with a purpose-driven organization and contribute their skills to help support and scale operations for drivers and owner-operators.
If you’re passionate about logistics, committed to excellence, and believe in empowering others through information and opportunity — I’d love to connect.
You can reach out via our official website or connect with me directly on social media. Let’s build something powerful together.
