Meet Tracel Dickerson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tracel Dickerson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Tracel , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

It’s easy to look at others who seem to have it all together and assume their lives are free of struggle. But the truth is, everyone is fighting battles you can’t always see. That realization has helped ground me—reminding me not to measure my journey against someone else’s highlight reel.

Overcoming imposter syndrome isn’t about pretending to have it all figured out. It’s about knowing your worth, accepting what you don’t know, and being open to learning and growing. I remind myself often: You are where you’re supposed to be. There’s power in trusting the process, embracing the unknown, and honoring your own voice.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I was born and raised in Jersey City, but I was also raised in the church—a dual identity that deeply informs my work as a photographer. My artistic vision is rooted in capturing life within the African American church community, a world I know intimately through my home church, Miracle Temple Church.

Growing up, I rarely saw church life portrayed in a way that reflected my own experience—the warmth, the spirit, the raw beauty, and even the vulnerability that comes with it. Through my lens, I aim to share what I see: the strength of the congregation, the emotion of worship, and the quiet moments of reflection that often go unnoticed.

This body of work is more than documentation; it is an invitation. I want viewers to step into the rhythm and spirit of Black church culture, to witness its power, its humanity, and its enduring presence in the lives of those who call it home.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As a recent graduate of NJCU, I’ve grown both personally and creatively. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is to never be afraid to ask questions—curiosity is a strength, not a weakness. I’ve also developed a deeper understanding of time management and, most importantly, I’ve learned not to doubt myself. These lessons continue to shape how I approach my work, my growth as an artist, and the way I navigate the world. If you’re early in your personal or professional journey, one of the most important things to remember is: don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes aren’t failures—they’re how we learn, grow, and ultimately help others who may walk the same path. The more you try, the more you’ll uncover about what works for you, what doesn’t, and how to build around your challenges. The journey won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it. Keep going, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to share what you’ve learned along the way—you never know who you’ll inspire.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back. I go into a quiet room, or take a walk around the neighborhood, and I pray. That time helps me recenter, reflect, and regain perspective.

But even if prayer isn’t your way of finding peace, it’s still so important to step away from what’s troubling you. Go outside. Touch grass. Breathe in the air around you. The simple act of changing your environment—even briefly—can help clear your mind and make the challenge ahead feel just a little more manageable.
