Meet Tracy Hazel

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tracy Hazel . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Tracy, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I think it’s very important for self care and work- life balance. Setting time aside for family and friends is absolutely essential in my business. It’s important for employees to focus on their family needs first. When I created my business back in 2007, the primary goal was to work around my children’s schedule. I think my business has been successful because it was flexible enough to allow me to attend all the school events, be the parent chaperone and all the things that really are important to me.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a woman owned business owner. I teach and consult on all things related to occupational safety. I first became a CPR instructor in 1996 while working at General Motors in Lansing Mi. Since then I have served as the Region Director for Heath and Safety with the American Red Cross, before starting my business full time in 2007. My business (Advanced Training and Consulting, LLC) was awarded the Top Lansing Community Business award in 2023. I am the 2024 recipient of the Sandra Irion Distinguished Service to The Michigan Safety Conference Award. I am the current NACW President (National Association of Career Women), Chair of the Security Division MSC and Board of Director MSC.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think having a lot of patience, passion and dedication are three skills that have my career great. It takes a lot of continuous work and learning to feel confident and be successful. There were many days that I had to really get motivated. It’s OK to take the time off and to enjoy the good things in life, as long as you get back at it. A successful business is built over time, experiences and having trust within the industry you work in. Being a good person and making good choices in good faith often equates to having a successful business.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Business networking is absolutely essential. There are so many opportunities to connect with other small business owners in your area. I often participate in the Lansing Regional Chamber, Lansing Women’s Forum, MSC and the National Association of Career Women’s monthly meeting for both professional and personal growth.
