Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tracy Metro. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tracy, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Optimism is a funny thing. I believe that some people think optimism is a trait you are born with and yet I believe optimism is a choice we make every day. Having said that, I do think some people are wired to think optimistically while others are more realists who have to work at seeing the sunny side of things…and yet I truly believe you can fake your way to optimism. As an optimist, I think it’s kinda funny that I actually think optimism is a choice!!! If that isn’t the most optimistic thing I’ve said so far I don’t know what is!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
For most of my life, I’ve been on TV hosting cheap & cheerful home makeovers on streaming platforms/channels such as Netflix, YouTube, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Hallmark, etc.
IRL I’ve been lucky enough to design lots n lots of stunning places for some really incredible people. I’ve worked on homes, galleries, restaurants and even a vintage houseboat & motorhome (OK, those are my pet projects).
My designs have been showcased online, in newspapers, magazines and even as a chapter in a book.
And, the latest exciting news is that I have a book (published by Harper Collins) coming out this summer! It’s called Stick-It and is a repositionable sticker book about interior design. When Harper Collins explained that my book was meant to have 10,000 words I got more than a wee bit concerned that I wouldn’t have that much to say. Fun fact, I had a LOT to say and I’m most excited to be sharing it with the world, so thank you for taking an interest in Stick-It!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I love this question!
1. When I was a kid, I used to play with a Bop Bag… it’s one of those weighted, inflatable clowns which you’d punch to the ground and it would immediately pop back up. Being a human Bop Bag has been one of the qualities about myself for which I’m the most proud. No matter what field you find yourself in for work or even in love, you will inevitably get punched down at some point and if you can bop back up then you didn’t really get knocked down! You just go momentarily paused.
2. I used to work with a woman who would finish doing her task and then ask the “powers that be” what can I do to make it better. That kind of open dialog was and still is something I try to do every day with my interior design clients. It’s not about me being the boss, but rather it’s about US working together to get something done with our collective vision. I’ve really put this concept into practice with writing my book, Stick-It! The Harper Collins team has published thousands of books and yet this is my first, so being comfortable asking what I can do to make it better has given us an open forum for collaboration.
3. This one is pretty simple. Do what you say you’ll do. For example, if you say you’ll circle back with somebody, put it in your calendar and actually follow up with them. That kind of consistency builds trust. And, trust is the thing relationships are made of.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
For a few years now, I’ve dreamt of doing interior design projects for musicians as I’ve imagined that their aesthetic would be incredibly creative and unexpected. I’ve always thought it would be fun to design a creative space for them to write their music. Therefore, if you know of any musicians who aren’t into grey walls and want some help creating a groovy pad, send ’em my way 😉
