We recently connected with Tracy Quinlan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tracy, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room that looks like me has been my schtick my entire life. French was my first language, before I was 7 years old I had been put into several situations where everyone else only spoke English and it was glaringly obvious I was different. From being a pudgy dancer, to being the only one of my friends who was raising their siblings, or being a 10 year old in a group of adults in a weight loss club- I rarely fit the mold of the situations I was put in. As a young person it was a challenge, and I desperately tried to be liked- usually through humor. What I’ve only come to fully realize in my 50’s is that my greatest gifts are the things that make me different. Being the only one in the room who is me is a huge advantage and helps me find my people.
Once I realized I was looking for MY people rather than trying to be everything to everyone, life became easier. Success lies in those who seek me out for my individual skills and personality- surrounding yourself with your people makes every aspect of your life smoother because you no longer have to pretzel yourself into something you’re not.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was in the beauty industry for over 30 years, but I changed career 10 years ago. Astrology was always a passion. What it taught me about myself, and explained about the life around me gave me a lot of comfort throughout my life, so I wanted to help people in the same way, so I created Consult the Sky. I’m a consulting astrologer, I also teach astrology and write a blog. I also write horoscopes the the Llewellyn Astrological Calendar.
After a few years of seeing clients I really wanted to offer them something that used the astrological information we discovered in their birth charts to facilitate healing and change. Through a very round about route I discovered Acutonics. Acutonics is a healing modality that uses sound healing tools and tuning forks based on astrological and other mystic sound intervals along with acupuncture meridians and points to facilitate healing. I’m able to use the birth chart to guide treatment to help people integrate and accept all parts of themselves while also calming the nervous system, balancing energy centers etc. The beauty of it is, just like consulting, treatment can be done at a distance to allow meeting clients from all over.
April 2024 I’m training to become an Acutonics instructor, so I’ll not only be able to teach level 1 & 2 of Acutonics, but also self-treatment workshops and retreats. The end of April I’ll also be opening up my membership called Jupiter Club which is for people who want to learn to read their charts and learn more about astrology and interpreting the birth chart. I’ll also host a monthly talk that updates attendees of upcoming astrological events and how to navigate them, plus monthly workshops on different chart reading techniques. These are included in the membership or can be attended separately for those who don’t want to commit.
I also started a Podcast this year with a partner- Lillian Bennett of Effective Astrology- called Sky Notes Podcast. It’s an astrology based podcast that’s fun casual and informative.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have always been an excellent communicator- I was in the beauty industry for over 30 years- and my ability to learn what people wanted, even when they didn’t know themselves is a gift that’s helpful in all areas. Astrology is something I learned about as a teenager, that was only a hobby for many years, has turned out to be such a rich source of passion I didn’t even know was there.
I’m an empath. I have only gotten a hold of this gift in the past 10 years. I feel like a large percentage of people who go into the beauty service sector are also empaths, but are rarely taught about how to work with it and also protect themselves. One of the most powerful things empathic people can do for themselves is to learn all about energetic/psychic hygiene.
The second powerful lesson I’ve learned is in the ways my ego can get in the way of helping people. Reminding ourselves that sessions are not about our own objectives or satisfaction improves our work, but also dials the stress back immeasurably. This is why I don’t refer to myself as a “sound healer”. The sound and vibration along with the client are the healers, I’m the facilitator and understanding that has been everything.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I’m at a strange impasse where I need to pay other people to do stuff I’m not good at for my business, but haven’t had much luck finding the right solution. If you’re a member of any entrepreneur groups you’ve heard it a million times that being only one person is tricky. Finding the right fit of people who could help me with my business is definitely my current frustration.
