Meet Travis Barrett

We were lucky to catch up with Travis Barrett recently and have shared our conversation below.

Travis, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from my upbringing. My mom is very positive, laughs a lot, enjoys life and has fun. There were certainly difficult times, but she never let me dwell or live in those difficult times for too long. I was definitely allowed to feel the pain/difficulty and go through all of the emotions, it’s just not a place where you want to stay for too long.

My parents did a great job of communicating to me early from a young age that I need to be very careful who I surround myself with. So, I was (and still am) very particular about who I spend time with. I spend time with optimistic and fun people.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m originally from New Castle, Indiana. I became very interested in nutrition and performance on the tail end of high school so I decided to attend college to pursue those interests. Once I graduated from Ball State, I went to Indiana University for grad school. After grad school, I found a job in Lawrence, Kansas and that’s where my career began.

Currently, I’m the head strength and conditioning coach for the SERE schoolhouse at Fairchild, AFB.

My business is Dynamic Human Performance that is a coaching & consulting business that deals with police, fire, and other high performing individuals & organizations.

I just started my PhD program at the University of Idaho. I’m focusing on hormonal responses to stress and interested in seeing if there are any indicators that could potentially help predict likelihood of injury.

I love what I do for a living. I’m extremely passionate (borderline obsessed) with how to truly maximize someone’s potential. This includes the mental, physical, nutrition, and recovery sides of someone’s life. In some capacity everyday, I am responsible for helping change someone’s life. This is a tremendous honor and responsibility that I take very seriously. I want to help people improve their health and performance in whatever way possible.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Listening
Empathy
Timing

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes I need to expand my reach and contribute/help more people. The best way to do this is for me to contribute to other people’s podcasts/blogs/etc. I want to help answer questions about health and performance and help dispel myths around those areas.
