We recently connected with Travis Griffith and have shared our conversation below.
Travis , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is something that comes by necessity. A point comes in life where the only option is to keep going despite the challenges and without regard to the odds. Fear is left behind and the only thing left is a drive to do the one thing you know you’re meant to do, I’ve reached that point. I think a person needs to fully accept any possible outcome and go all the way pursuing that thing. My thing is adventure and, hopefully, some good photography along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
There’s a question I ask myself often: “Why do I do what I do?”
If the answer isn’t: “Because it feels good and makes me happy,” I’m not doing it.
That’s where creating art comes in. I started in 2020 in the midst of a divorce and some scary life changes. The art began as a way for me to deal with the pain. I took photos and wrote about them as messages to myself; little reminders that all will be okay and that there’s beauty everywhere.
Eventually I worked up the nerve to share those thoughts and photos online, and people resonated with it.
So that’s the brand of Light and Magic Art.
There’s always beauty around you. Life should feel good. You’re going to be okay. Go experience this beautiful world. You may not be able the change the world, but you can always change yours.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Here’s the thing about qualities, knowledge, and skills gained along a journey:
I think those things come when you stop caring. When you release significance to things in life you once thought significant. Amazing things happen when you surrender and follow the calling within you without regard to what you think might happen or what people may think of you for doing it. Accept all possible outcomes and do the things you’re inspired to do. When that happens you’re inspired to take certain actions that build the qualities and skills you need to keep going.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Obstacles and challenges are disguised opportunities. I spent the last month on the road exploring the Western US. There are times I was completely out of money, sleeping in the car, staying in a location until money came in and funding the next leg of the trip. I think the number one answer to a question about obstacles will often be money. But money always comes. By surrendering and following the path set by our intentions we’re bound to meet people and come across opportunities that will pay. More specifically, I’ve been dealing with the question of, “Do I sell lower-quality art at a lower price and get more sales, or do I sell higher-end art, sacrifice quantity, and focus on quality?” For me the answer is to focus on higher-end art that better captures my vision of how I want my images portrayed. Will it work? We’ll see, Whether I sell zero or a million doesn’t matter. What matters is my commitment to create. The rest will take care of itself.
