We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Travis Mitchel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Travis below.
Travis , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
In the beginning I was not confident about my ability to sell my cookies or that it would grow. The confidence came with the more I did, the more confident I became. Consistent positive feedback from the community also confirmed I was moving in the right direction.
God has shown me along the way that I’m worthy and has given me the bandwidth to show up, so that shows up in my self esteem no matter what happens.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Travis Mitchel and I really enjoy sweets, lol. I work as a Physical Therapist Assistant by day and baker by night. I baked my first home made cake 12 years ago which was carrot cake and from then on my family insisted that it had to be made. I continued to bake, teaching myself as a creative outlet during a rough season in my life. I learned how to bake through tv, cookbooks and loved ones and I am still learning today.
The chocolate chunk cookie, which is my best seller, came about from the concept of recreating a cookie I had from a vendor’s wife. but I wanted to put my own spin on it. Over the years I perfected it, making adjustments as I learned more baking techniques and adjusting the ingredients. I soon had really good feedback.
I have added to the menu Grama’s Tea Cake Cookie, New Orleans’ style pralines and a couple pies.
What makes me excited about what I do is the social part, lol. When I sell at the markets, I get to meet so many different types of people, smile at them and I love to see their reaction after they have tasted my cookies. Their eyes light up, like wow! It’s just fun.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
What has been most impactful for me has been starting afraid, even when I did not have all the details figured out I would suggest the same to someone else. I would suggest collaborating/networking with other small business owners and taking advantage of the free resources that are available.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m looking to partner with someone locally to sell my product. Someone who is more knowledgeable about this process, kind, gracious, and has integrity .
I would really enjoy working with corporate businesses.
