We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Trell “The Original Cocoa Goddess”. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Trell below.
Hi Trell, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I’ve learned to accept all the positive parts of me. I accepted my uniqueness and individuality at a very young age. Different is good. Change is great! I’ve learned to teach others what I know and to be a good learner as well.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have overcame so many obstacles and challenges in my life. One of the biggest challenges that opened my eyes was becoming a widow at a young age. When I saw my husband pass away in front of my eyes, his death gave me a new outlook and perspective on life. Since then, I vowed to truly live life. In doing so, I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but I’ve taken them as learning lessons, not regrets. I also vowed to myself that I would teach my children to live and learn, fearlessly.
Recently, I completed my first pageant since I was 8 years old. The feeling was exhilarating and I was successful in proving to myself and others that beauty, true beauty, comes in so many shapes, sizes, and colors. I will be having weight loss surgery soon to become a healthier me, but wanted to exemplify to others that while on a health journey, that does not make you less beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Starting this month, I will be revamping my podcast to an on location broadcast. This means I will no longer do the traditional podcast where I sit and talk about different topics, this year I will actually show myself and others how to live and not just exist.
Be sure to tune in to “Life with Trell, The Original Cocoa Goddess” on all social media platforms as I give a glimpse into my real life as I learn to live and not just exist. In doing so, I hope to inspire others.
You can also catch me on Fridays as I co host “Scorebiggerdating.com” podcast with the host Razzle Dazzle, where Sports + Dating = Fun! Every Friday at 8:30pm we have the time of our lives while meeting new people.
In June, you can catch me co hosting the “Score Bigger Dating All Black Affair”.! Put on your all black evening wear and prepare to have the time of your life in Savannah, Georgia!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. You must know that love conquers all. It is important to treat others as you would want to be treated regardless of our differences. I learned this from my mother, Maggie Samuel at a very young age.
2 It’s important to be articulate and to know what you are talking about. Knowledge is power! I learned this from my Bigdaddy William Samuel and my mom/aunt Debra Samuel at a very young age.
3. BE YOURSELF! Be genuine and intentional. Accept yourself flaws and all and know that your differences make you unique! There are so many ways to love and as a person that is unique, you have so much to teach and offer others. I learned this from my uncle/dad Glenn Murray and William Melvin.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Becoming a healthier me is the #1 obstacle and challenge in my life at this very moment! I love myself and the skin I’m in, but I know I must become a healthier version of me. Over the next few months, my journey will include me starting a weight loss regimen that I’m inviting everyone to witness virtually. I’m looking forward to gaining accountability partners and to exemplifying to my peers, family, and friends that the task of getting healthy is easy and can be done!
