Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tre’sean Durham. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tre’Sean , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my mother. She always carried a hustler’s spirit and made a way for me and my sister no matter what. Growing up we didn’t have a lot, but we had what we needed and that was because of my mother. She never made excuses, she just made a way. Even when she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2010, she was able to beat cancer and stayed in remission for 7 years. She was the strongest person I knew and she instilled that in me. She would always tell me that things aren’t always going to go your way, but you never give up and keep going no matter what.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a self taught photographer/videographer from Louisville KY, born and raised. I created Supply Lab Media back in 2018 with the goal of providing top-notch visual services for individuals, groups, entertainment, sports, corporate events, and businesses. My mission is to capture and enhance the vision of my client by photographing the moments that matter most to them. Photography is truly a passion and it doesn’t feel like work when I have the camera in my hands.
Growing up, I was a 3 sport athlete pretty much my entire life. I played football, basketball, and baseball from third grade, all the up til college. Through my experiences playing basketball at Berea College and Thomas More University, I learned the true meaning of discipline, teamwork and preparation which are qualities that shine through my work today.
When I am not behind the lens, I enjoy reading, being in nature, playing basketball/workout, watch movies and spend quality time with my family. All of these experiences helped shape my artistry and allowed me to connect with my clients on a personal level.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the 3 most important qualities or skills in photography would be understanding the fundamentals, learning how to use proper lighting and marketing. As a photographer, you must know and understand the basic functions of your camera. So, exposure, aperture, shutter speed, and iso are basic fundamentals of photography that anyone should be your foundation. When it comes to lighting, I learned that not having the proper lighting equipment or not knowing how to manipulate lighting could make or break your shoot. Lighting was something I struggled with early on. In February of 2023 I locked in with a mentor for photography and she really helped take my talents to another level. When it comes to Marketing, I learned that just because you are a great photographer and you have amazing work doesn’t translate to having a ton of clientele or followers on social media. You really have to do your research on what audiences you are trying to appeal to and what are you selling. I would definitely recommend having a crm or some type of database that will help you track your analytics. Not only to be the most efficient, but also so you can tangibly see your results and how to move forward.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Back in February 2023, I decided to lock in with a photography mentor to help perfect my craft. We worked on how to use proper studio lighting and how to use the frequency separation action in Photoshop. After 9 months of working with Denisha I noticed my work improved drastically. I was able to grow my clientele and rebrand my business. It was one of the best decisions I made for myself.
