Meet Trey East

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trey East. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Trey , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.

It’s like a trust that I have in myself, a trust in the work I put in. There are many hours I feel like I put in behind the scenes that no one sees. The haters and nay-sayers are just a portion of the opinions I get on the daily. I can’t read too much into the opinions of others when it comes to my work whether that is praise or hate I have to find a happy medium to keep me motivated.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am the founder and co-owner of East Ventures Digital, a media production company. I consider myself a multifaceted creator. I have expertise in video production and photography, but my skills and interests extend beyond that. I am also involved in directing, producing, writing, and storytelling through the company I established.

Initially, East Ventures Digital focused on branding and corporate work. However, as I improved my skills and felt the urge to challenge myself, I transitioned into creating short films and social media content. I am very excited about this transition and I have a few short films that I will be submitting to film festivals and premiering at events later this year.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Resilient, unconventional, and inquisitive – these qualities have been crucial to my journey. In the face of disapproval from many individuals and companies, I persevered to create a technically sound product, which in turn enhanced the creative aspect. Embracing unconventionality allowed me to push boundaries and produce aesthetically pleasing content, drawing inspiration from my favorite creators while resisting the pressure to conform to social media trends. Fostering curiosity was instrumental in my early career, driving me to relentlessly seek improvement and acquire new skills. My dedication to learning led me to “YouTube University,” where I spent countless hours mastering various techniques and styles. My advice to those embarking on their own journey is to handle criticism and praise with equanimity, seek guidance from experienced individuals in your field, express your authenticity through your work, and never stop soaking up knowledge every day.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

This answer may sound like I’m sitting on the fence but I think it’s a combination of both. If I had to lean in one direction I’d probably choose going in on a particular strength of yours. I’m not a proponent of putting all your eggs in one basket but I do think you can spread yourself too thin as well. If you’re focused on too many things at a time you can’t truly master one thing. Malcolm Gladwell says, “It takes about 10,000 hours of practice to master a certain skill.”
I picked up a camera for the first time in 2017, I had no idea how to use it and zero experience shooting any kind of content whether that was photographs or videos. The amount of information I felt I needed to learn was overwhelming because I felt I needed to be perfect all at once and immediately. Although video and photo content often come from the same camera, the two are completely different disciplines, and I struggled to learn both simultaneously. I needed to focus on one at a time and develop my skills, this allowed for more content and helped me get creative while building my portfolio.
