We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trey Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Trey , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I would say my purpose has always been to motivate and inspire. I realized that at the young age of seven when I was introduced to the sport of football at Trenholm Park in Columbia, SC. No matter what position I played, I wanted to be a player of showmanship like Deion Sanders and Chad Johnson, but also the encouraging and earnestly style of Ray Lewis. During my early years of playing on the gridiron, I had my first opportunity as an actor and model with Z-One Model and Talent Agency. Although as a kid, I honestly just wanted to play football. So after shooting one commercial and being casted as an extra for a movie that starred Justin Long, I decided to relinquish being a child actor and model. I also began my martial arts journey by learning Taekwondo at my neighborhood church ministry from Sensei Cornelius. The teachings that I received about self confidence, accountability, responsibility, and respectfulness were truly influential for what was to come. At the age of 15 I began my artistic journey by pursuing dance at Westwood High School in Blythewood, SC under the mentorship of Veneshia Stribling and absolutely fell in love with the new sense of self expression and creativity that surged through my spirit. I realized that I had this constant urge to not just be different from anyone else, but to show everyone that it is okay standout and be unapologetic about who you are and what makes you happy.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an actor of many talents. I have a great deal of experience as a hip hop dancer/choreographer. As well as being trained in multiple martial art styles such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Taekwondo. I am also an intermediate level acrobatic. I have done extensive commercial work for 9Round Kickboxing Fitness. I have choreographed and starred in various fight scenes. I also have experience as a voiceover artist. I am currently represented by Fast Lane Talent Agency based in Charlotte, NC. Not only am I an actor but I am also an internationally published model. I have walked in multiple runway fashion shows and I am a brand ambassador for clothing brands such Aesthetic Built and Kimura Gang Apparel. As of right now, my publications range from Vous Magazine in Madrid, Spain and Photohouse Magazine in Aarhus, Denmark. The greatest feeling I receive from my career is knowing that I there is no limit to what I can do. I have the opportunity to constantly learn across various art forms and truly gain a better understanding of the world from all walks of life.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities that have genuinely helped on my journey are perseverance, gratitude, and open-mindedness. With the combination of these three attributes, I have been able to take on the tough yet rewarding journey of being an artist. Understanding that for every one hundred “no’s”, there will be one “yes”. Accepting that there will be plenty of surprises that the world will have for me at every turn. As long as I remain thankful for what I have right in front me, I know that I can whether storm no matter what comes my way. My advice for anybody on this journey called life, please appreciate what you have now and make sure that you are always willing to be a student, no matter how much of a master you are.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking to collaborate with artists of any art form. Right now I am currently seeking to work with anyone who is in the need of a voice actor. Although I have various other talents, I would definitely like to add more projects to my resume that showcase my range in acting behind a microphone.
