We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tri-Beats. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tri-Beats below.
Tri-Beats, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Unfortunately, working on creative performances throughout the year alongside our daily lives comes with inevitable burnout. We sometimes give all of our energy into a single moment rather than pace ourselves. We all agree that stepping back and focusing on other hobbies helps us recharge.
I (Geena) have a tendency to drown in the viewpoint of a viewer and take note of every possible event we could perform at. I have to remind myself that this is a passion, and I can’t give my best if I push the limits of me and my members. In the meantime, to keep inspiration alive, I look for newer opportunities with doable deadlines that come up.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are a dance performance group based in Kansas City. We perform original choreography to Asian pop music and other genres. You can catch us at cultural festivals, anime conventions, and more, both inside and outside of Kansas City – Midwest KPOP Festival, Planet Anime KC, Springfield Japanese Fall Festival, and many others!
If you’re from Oklahoma City, check us out at the Asian Night Market Festival, October 4th! KPOP Demon Hunter fans, get ready to sing along!
If you want to see us in Kansas City, check us out at Planet Anime KC’s KC Idol✧Festival, November 23rd! Miku fans, get ready to wave your penlights!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Teamwork, practice, and time management.
Teamwork: Understanding your team and their abilities is the foundation of such cooperative endeavors. Realize each others’ strengths and weaknesses, and push each other in the right direction. Each member of Tri-Beats has their own strengths that we try to incorporate into our work. We have different ways of learning, so we adjust the way we teach each other depending on the task.
Practice: When it comes to athletic performances, we have experience! We all used to take martial arts together and competed as a self-sport. In the beginning, it’s easy to think that if you’re sweating and your heart is pumping, you’re practicing really hard. However, you’ll come across moments where your body isn’t moving the way you want, and all you can zone in on is your heavy breathing. Learning to practice efficiently by slowing down the music, recording videos of yourself for review, and executing moves differently than the same way you’ve been trying to do for the past hour will help you. You have to be patient with yourself.
Time management: Don’t take on too many projects or tasks! Pace yourself. Write out your deadlines. If there’s a project you desperately want to do, make the time for it. However, do not continuously sacrifice yourself for it. Making time to recharge and put your best into a project can get overlooked. We’ve had to turn down performance opportunities because of a busy schedule, but it’s better to go into a performance prepared than underprepared and damage your image.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, we are always open to collaborate! We love doing collaboration stages with other dancers – we often do so for KPOP performances. Any event planners or organizations that want our style of performance, whether to add a fresh performance that their event has never seen before or to find a performance style that fits their theme just right, we would be so happy to partner with them! We often perform for Asian pop culture events, such as conventions and cultural festivals, but we are always searching for a new stage outside of our usual path.
