We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tris Sutherland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tris below.
Hi Tris, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
Any hate I see online or otherwise, I actually smile, because I know that if you are able to generate that sort of reaction from some people, that actually means you are doing something right. You are doing something that makes people that are struggling with their own successes or failures feel something, and you have this great opportunity to be a great example for them. I chose to always respond to it with compassion. By the end of it, I find they have so much more respect for me and actually support me. The hate comes from their own insecurities. If you can come from a place of compassion, you can actually help them feel better and maybe motivate them to turn the hate into their own motivation.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Million Dollar Producer and Agent Strategist with a background in media. I’ve been an actress as well for the past 10 years, so I enjoy helping creatives like myself, along with, buyers, sellers, and families find the home that is right for them. I have a blog where I share expert market tips and lifestyle inspiration, and right now I’m actually working on writing a book so I’m very excited about that! It’s in the very early stages so be watching my socials to get updates on that.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I had no idea that my experience with going globally viral on social media would be able to tie into my real estate business the way that it has!
When I first became a real estate agent, I tried to separate these two things about myself; a social media public figure, and my real estate business.
It didn’t take me long to realize that these two things both made up who I have become as a whole, and I was actually doing myself a disservice separating the two.
My advice would be that If you have things about yourself like this, instead of separating them, embrace them, because this is what makes you different and what makes you stand out from everyone else in your field.
Don’t take away what makes you special.
Embrace it.
You will be happier and more successful for it.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I read a book called “The Agent’s Edge, Secret Strategies to win listings and make your fortune selling real estate”
Its a book I think all agents should read.
It takes you in detail through how to really show how valuable you are as an agent.
Most people don’t realize all of the work that goes into buying and selling a home and everything we do behind the scenes because we make it look easy, and we do that because its our job to also help our client not be stressed about the process, but we end up making it look so easy that they think our job isn’t difficult or that anyone can do it, so this book does a great job in showing how to really let our clients see how much we really do offer for them, and in detail how to present it.
