We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trish Ahjel Roberts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Trish Ahjel, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is getting back up when you’ve been knocked down. When you get knocked down, you have a decision to make, do you just lie down and give up or do you keep trying? There have been times when I’ve wanted to give up but I have an inner knowing that keeps me going. For some people that might look like faith in God, a benevolent Universe, or some other sense of Divinity. For me, it’s all of that and more. I have a very collaborative view of spirituality. I also know that I have a unique purpose and destiny. I know that none of us learn powerful lessons from a place of ease. We learn by overcoming challenges. So, it’s through that process of facing adversity and overcoming it that I have become more resilient, stronger, and wiser with each passing day. Sometimes I look at my life and it seems like a lot. I’ve been through childhood abuse, domestic violence, divorce, single parenting, and well-documented institutional racism throughout my corporate career. But every experience has led me to this idea of “post-traumatic wisdom.” I’m able to access a deep well of compassion when I work with my coaching clients, speak to groups, and lead retreats on Diversity, Compassionate Leadership, Happiness, and Transforming Anger into Calm or Constructive Action.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m the founder of the Mind-Blowing Happiness coaching company and the bestselling author of “12 Steps to Mind-Blowing Happiness” and “The Anger Myth: Understanding and Overcoming the Mental Habits That Steal Your Joy.” I help individuals and organizations reach their full potential. For individuals, this means helping people identify talents, find confidence, and walk in purpose to achieve goals beyond the scope of what they thought was possible.
I help organizations reach their potential with workshops, training, and retreats to help employees and members identify limiting beliefs, break past imposter syndrome, and build better teams.
This is our 5th year in business and we’re so excited to have earned the DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) certification from the state of Georgia and the WOSB (Women-Owned Small Business) certification from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
We have so many exciting opportunities to collaborate with businesses, organizations, and yoga studios to bring our life-changing content to audiences. Our new Mind-Blowing Happiness Academy launches on August 29 and is free for everyone!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back on the five years since I launched my company, the three qualities that served me most were curiosity, generosity, and courage. I’ve learned so much over the years and I think that comes from staying open to new ideas, organizations, and people. In the world of yoga, we call it having a “beginner’s mind.” Never think you know everything – there is always more to learn.
In my book, 12 Steps to Mind-Blowing Happiness, the sixth step deals with generosity. When we give of ourselves it always comes back, often in unexpected ways. I can’t count the times I helped someone and it came back to me many times over. And the sense of satisfaction I feel when I help someone transform their life or organization is indescribable.
At the end of the day courage is critical. Comfort is the enemy of growth and progress. A significant part of my work is helping leaders step into their confidence so they can show up the way they want to in the world. Whether it’s leading meetings, speaking in front of thousands, or acing media appearances.
So, if you’re just starting out, my advice is this: Don’t be stingy. Keep an open mind. And, try new things regularly to grow your courage and confidence.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love working with collaboration partners. Lately, I’ve been partnering with yoga studios and other wellness centers to bring content to their audiences. You can access more information here: https://www.mindblowinghappinessprograms.com/yoga or email info@TrishAhjelRoberts.com.
