Meet Trish P. Miller MBA, MPH

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trish P. Miller MBA, MPH a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Trish P. Miller, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
.I can’t say that I found my purpose, but rather it found me. When I was a teenager I had an experience in the water that showed me just how important knowing how to swim was. My career in public health laid the ground work for my desire to to positively affect communities by educating them on ways to stay healthy and I chose to use this knowledge to make a difference in something that was personal to me. I feel that drownings can be eliminated by teaching people how to be safe in and around the water, and by giving them the means to have a personal relationship with water. Each first lap that we celebrate and each promotion in our waters confirms that I am doing the work that I was born to do.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
The SwemSchool provides the freedom of swimming to all, with a focus on communities with the highest rates of drownings. Since I learned how to swim as an adult, I have a unique understanding of what it takes to overcome fears and to build a relationship with the water. We pride ourselves on hiring from the communities that we serve and building a pipeline of diverse aquatics professionals. We provide youth and adult lessons, certifications in CPR/First Aid, Lifeguarding and WSI, as well fitness classes, clinics and a competitive youth and adult SwemTeam.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Desire to make a difference, chasing work that makes your heart full and the resilience to see it through.

My advice would be to do work that matters to you, everything else will fall into place. Also, surround yourself with people who push you well beyond your wildest dreams.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was to give me the space to be as big and as bad as I wanted to be. They showed me love and support, but created an environment for me to grow, make mistakes and learn. A quote that speaks to my drive and resilience is: “I would hate to die and never do the thing that I was born to do.” Bishop TD Jakes.
