We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tristan Chuey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tristan below.
Tristan, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Living… as simple as that answer is, it’s the honest truth. Part of my creative process is just writing down everything that comes to mind. Whether that be one line, or a whole song. I’m an overthinking, I zone out and just think about everything thats going on around me and the world. I go off based off any little thing. My recent album that I just finished is a lot of that. A lot of songs are about moments that happened between my last album, till now. I have the same process when it comes to making my beats. When I get stuck or uninspired, I will go take a drive and listen to albums for hours or go workout, maybe call a friend or something, and BOOM! I figured out what this certain instrumental is missing, “oh maybe if I add this synth to that one beat from 3 years ago, it might work” things like that keeps me going, just being able to create something is a beautiful thing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Well I’m a musician, Producer/Rapper. I been doing music for a few years now, but as far as actually taking it serious, it’s been about a year and some months, about to be two. My music is very much focused on growth and sound. I feel like as I get older, my music becomes more refined and layered. I used to wear my influences on my sleeve and I wasn’t ashamed of it, but you could tell who I was trying to sound like early on in my career. Now it’s different, I still have those roots as part of my artistry, but when people hear my new music, it’s like “oh I like this beat, it sound like You” and that’s the goal! I want to make albums that are “Me” and I think people respect that about my music. I’m not chasing trends or trying to make the new wave sound, I make what I want to make and you either like it or not. With that being said, it doesn’t mean that I don’t like to experiment and step out of my comfort zone. That’s the fun part about music and having the freedom to do it. I think artists figure out a formula and just keep riding that wave until it dies down. That’s how people get stuck! Me, I have a few “bangers” under my belt but I never try to recreate what made that song popular. It’s all about the moment and what’s going on around you and your life. If you just wanna recreate the same moment over and over, what are you living for?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One skill is “Be open minded” while you’re taking up a new hobby or endeavor. Allow yourself to learn new tricks. Look up guides, YouTube video, books. Also allow yourself to make mistakes, don’t stop because you messed up once! Try it again and again and a certain love will come out from that, once you actually master whatever you’re doing.
On the journey of creativity, USE ALL YOUR RESOURCES! I can’t stress that enough. I made my first mixtape off my android phone and an old laptop back in 2016, I looked up every possible way to get beat-making software cause I wanted to make music so bad in high school. Not the best work or situation but I was still able to create. I did everything I could, find the resources. Google is your friend and don’t be afraid to ask your friends if they wanna be apart of it but also make new connections if you can, that was my mistake in my youth. I didn’t look around for people that were into the same things as I was. I love my friends but not everybody you know what’s to be a musician nor care about your work. So meet new people, don’t be afraid to ask for collaborations, move with people that relate to you on the same level or similar passion.
Work on your craft everyday if you have the time, even if it’s for 30 minutes or 5 minutes. I be making beats on my lunch break on most days and if I need to record a song, I bring my laptop and mic and go to my car and start recording. Don’t allow life to keep you from being a creative. Balance is key and you gotta find that balance however you can.
1. Be open minded
2. Use your resources
3. Find balance

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Yes, doing everything myself. That’s why I tell people to use your resources. I feel like I’m sometimes stuck in this loop and I find myself doing a lot of work. Like, with features on my songs. I know people that have amazing voice, a great ability to rap, are able to make a crazy beat! But it always falls through. I sat with myself and wondered if I’m the problem but I don’t think I am. Like I said, some people just don’t take their talents seriously nor care to make something of it and that breaks my heart. So… I compromise. I rework music, sing on my own bridges, write raps for the empty spot that was intended for somebody else, etc. Hopefully that well change soon… not only do I have one album done, I’m in the middle of another and hope to get local artists on that one if possible. But that’s another issue in itself, funding! Some local artists are on too high of a horse, that they be trying to up charge or try to hustle you. That’s the sad thing about everybody trying to be a rapper. 70% are just scammers looking for a quick pay or just trying to get lit. But I’ll say that for that second album… *wink wink* lol
