Meet Trudy Stubson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trudy Stubson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Trudy, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

I have always been an optimistic person. Even from a young age. As I’ve grown older I have become more aware of what inspires my positive outlook on life. For me, I find that looking forward and not dwelling in the past makes it easier to be positive. The future is unknown and full of possibilities. That alone leaves room for good things. It leaves room for bad things too so I prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am an artist. For me that means that I get o create something new every day.
Every day I wake up and immediately go to my studio where I continue on something I started or contemplate new ideas.
I love that I get make something from nothing. I love the smell of my art supplies. I love the freedom I feel when I have full creative reign over my creation. I love the unexpected surprises that happen as I create. I also love the challenges presented when things don’t go as planned.
I think I was born to be an artist. I have always been compelled to tinker and play with things and create. I find it deeply rewarding to fullfill these creative compulsions.
When creating I am driven by a need to capture a feeling. The colors, textures, and visual interpretations of places, thoughts, and stories are all fluidly released through my hands and it’s tremendously cathartic.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

What are the three qualities, skills or knowledge that have greatly impacted my journey?

Firstly, a quality that has greatly impacted my journey is my tenacity. My siblings and I used to rough house with our much older neighbor growing up. He always said that we could take a lickin and keep on tickin. This tenacity is true in most aspects of my life. I enjoy a challenge and certainly don’t give up when things aren’t going my way. I’m always convinced that my energy and persistance will eventually get me where I need to go.

As far as skills go, I believe there are so many skillfull artists out there. Skill does not always equate success. I believe the most important skill is remaining true to yourself and what you want to create. I believe that art created authentically will connect more purely with people.

When I think of knowledge that has helped me on my journey, I think of the knowledge shared from other business owners and artists. The knowledge your peers share from their experiences is some of the most helpful information you can get. Make connections and listen more than you talk. (That one can be hard for me but I’m working on it.)

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

I always try to live my life like it could be over at any time. As a chronic over thinker, (and person who has lived with a lot of instability early in life) I am always evaluating where I am and if I am where I want to be. I haved learned that the only constant in life is that nothing is constant. Never take anything for granted and make sure you are living a life that you can be proud of when you look back. For me, that means doing what you can to make the world a better place than it was before you entered it. So I guess I could say that I am spending that decade exactly how I think it should be spent.
