Hello, everyone! I’m Tuan Anh Le, a passionate nail artist and graphic design enthusiast. With a background in graphic design and a deep love for the art of nails, I have embarked on a creative journey that combines these two fascinating worlds.
Graduating from San Diego City College with an Associate of Arts degree in Graphic Design, I initially began my career as a graphic designer in a firm. However, my path took an exciting turn when I discovered the captivating realm of nail art. I quickly realized that working on a small surface, like nails, allowed me to explore intricate details and unleash my creativity in a whole new way.
What truly sets me apart as a nail artist is my unique perspective rooted in graphic design. I believe that nails can be a canvas just as vast and inspiring as any large-scale design project. Drawing upon my skills in sketching and using programs like Illustrator, I meticulously plan and execute my nail art designs, infusing them with vibrant colors, shapes, and shades that captivate the eye.
But my journey doesn’t stop at creating stunning nail art. I have also embraced the role of an instructor, sharing my knowledge and passion with others. Alongside three other friends, I travel around offering nail workshops, where I connect with beginner nail techs, understand their challenges, and help them improve their skills. It’s a rewarding experience to see others grow and flourish in their creative pursuits.
In addition, I’ve established my own line of nail art products, carefully curated to provide fellow nail artists with the tools they need to bring their visions to life. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, there were three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had a significant impact on my growth as a nail artist:
Adaptability: Being open to learning and adapting to new techniques, trends, and technologies was crucial in my journey. The world of nail art is constantly evolving, and staying current with the latest innovations and styles is essential. My advice to those starting their journey is to embrace a growth mindset and be willing to explore new techniques, experiment with different tools and materials, and continuously seek out learning opportunities. Attend workshops, take online courses, and stay connected with the nail art community to stay updated and expand your skill set.
Creativity: Nurturing and honing your creative abilities is vital in the nail art industry. As a graphic designer, I was already equipped with a strong sense of creativity, but I discovered that translating that creativity onto nails required a unique approach. My advice is to cultivate your creative thinking through regular practice and exploration. Sketch, experiment with color combinations, study various design elements, and draw inspiration from diverse sources such as nature, art, fashion, and culture. Developing your own artistic style and constantly pushing the boundaries of your creativity will set you apart in this field.
Communication and Teaching: Sharing your knowledge and effectively communicating with clients, students, and fellow nail artists is an invaluable skill. In my journey, I found that being able to explain and demonstrate techniques, guide others through the process, and provide clear instructions greatly enhanced my interactions and teaching abilities. My advice for newcomers is to focus not only on perfecting your technical skills but also on developing your communication and teaching skills. Practice explaining your processes, be patient with others’ learning curves, and seek feedback to improve your instructional methods. Additionally, consider opportunities to mentor or assist other nail techs, as teaching and guiding others can deepen your own understanding and skill set.

My advice for those early in their journey is to embrace a growth mindset, stay open to new techniques and trends, nurture your creativity through continuous exploration, and focus on developing your communication and teaching abilities. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Take a step back and prioritize: When faced with multiple tasks or projects, it’s essential to take a moment to assess and prioritize. Break down your workload into smaller, manageable tasks and determine which ones require immediate attention. By creating a clear plan of action, you can alleviate the feeling of being overwhelmed and focus on one task at a time.
Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is crucial during overwhelming times. Engage in activities that help you relax and recharge, such as practicing mindfulness or meditation, engaging in physical exercise, spending time in nature, or pursuing hobbies that bring you joy. Remember to nourish your body with healthy meals, maintain a regular sleep schedule, and allow yourself time for rest and rejuvenation.
Reach out for support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to others for support when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Seek guidance from mentors, peers, or fellow nail artists who may have experienced similar situations. Sharing your concerns and seeking advice can provide valuable insights, different perspectives, and emotional support.
Time management techniques: Utilize time management techniques to improve productivity and reduce overwhelm. Consider using techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique, where you work in focused blocks of time followed by short breaks, or creating a schedule or to-do list to help you stay organized and prioritize tasks effectively.
Learn to delegate or outsource: If you find yourself consistently overwhelmed with tasks, consider delegating or outsourcing certain responsibilities. Whether it’s hiring an assistant or collaborating with other professionals, sharing the workload can alleviate stress and allow you to focus on the aspects of your work that truly require your attention and expertise.
Practice self-compassion: Remember to be kind and compassionate to yourself during overwhelming periods. Recognize that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times, and give yourself permission to take breaks and rest. Avoid self-criticism and instead focus on self-care and self-encouragement.
