We recently connected with Ty Lewis and have shared our conversation below.
Ty, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
My mother was an educator. Growing up, I would watch how she would selflessly give to others. It wasn’t like she had a lot, but her love for God always prompted her to give out of the little she had, knowing that she would be a blessing to someone. She would feed her students, buy them clothes and shoes, and ensure everyone had school supplies. Watching her give to others over time developed my love for being generous. She never complained and was always blessed. Not because of what she had but because of her ability to give. Serving others is a true example of generosity, and that’s where my love for it developed.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an educator, special education advocate, homeschool consultant, and curriculum developer. Working in education made me realize that there was a significant gap in literacy for scholars in grades K-12, particularly in low-income areas, that children with IEPs weren’t being serviced properly, and the curriculum the schools were purchasing was more about making money than meeting the child’s needs.
When I left the classroom in 2015, my goal was to create programs that would offer children an individualized education that would meet their needs on their level, advocate for children and parents who didn’t understand their educational rights, and create a curriculum that followed the Science of Reading.
I knew this was a community problem, and I wanted to provide a viable solution.
Jordan Lewis Consulting serves students throughout the US and provides professional development to educators and parents in literacy.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey were operating in integrity while following God, learning how to say no even when the request seemed life-changing, and being coachable, which helped me become successful.
The best advice I can give you is to focus on what you’re doing. There will be a lot of people who will have so much to say about your purpose and journey, but staying focused, listening to God, choosing to do things that are intentional and impactful over something that will keep you “busy and booked,” and being coachable is the key to success.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My most significant growth area has been realizing that I’m not a superwoman. I’ve learned how to be an effective leader and delegate so I will feel safe. Doing that has allowed me to be successful while limiting my stress and anxiety. My new mantra is to do what you can today and leave what you can’t for tomorrow!
