We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ty Rae Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ty Rae, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Becoming a father at 18, I had a lot to figure out and not a lot of time to do so. It was a very scary and isolating time for me that molded me into the man I am today. Having a kid, I knew I wasn’t going to be satisfied just working a regular job. I knew I wanted something better for myself and my daughter. I always said “if she’s gotta respect me then so does everybody. I have to be my own boss.” It led me to pursue more than the average man, the best way I can inspire her to follow her dreams is by accomplishing my own. I decided to pursue acting which because of my long locs at the time, pigeon holed me into only roles that fit “hood” stereotypes. I knew I had more to offer so I started writing scripts to write the roles I could see myself in, telling stories to get people to see things in ways they’ve never seen before. I hope people watch my projects and are as enlightened as they are entertained. I owe that motivation to my daughter and my relationship with God.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
BeanPole Entertainment is an award winning film and television production company that I started with my wife Jas in 2017. We want to tell stories that people are not used to seeing (so no tropes). As the head writer, I always take time to make sure we’re putting unique spins on the stories we tell and are usually awarded with a variety of perspectives and talking points that show how impactful our stories can be. We are currently working on our next feature while also entering pre production on a sketch comedy show. We have a busy 2024 and by 2025 hope to be dealing with bigger budgets and a wider audience. Fingers crossed. My ultimate goal is to turn BeanPole into a Distribution Company so I can give the next generation of filmmakers the opportunity to tell their stories the way they need to be told and support their journeys as artists.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, even more than consistency, because in this business you can’t always be consistent but if you’re always working at it you will find success.
Perspective, as a writer. It is my job to create characters that represent a part of our real world and give them identities and goals that people can identify with. I have to tell stories that touch people in ways that get them emotionally involved in the story. I can’t do that if I only saw things the way I think they should be. My perspective of seeing multiple view points helps me write layered stories.
Integrity, is an underrated skill. I don’t worship money nor do I have to be the richest man in the world. Anyone who works with me will never have to watch their back. Anyone of my peers will never have to worry about me stealing an idea because I have to look better than everyone else all the time. I am comfortable with who I am as an artist and I don’t have any competition, only peers. It gives me a freedom that I hope to show others they have too.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I definitely would not be where I am or where I’m going without my backbone and business partner, my wife Jasmine. She is truly one of one and the only reason I feel brave enough to want to achieve so much. Her strategic mind is like no other and I can’t wait to enjoy the fruits of our labor together. She puts in too much work for my vision and her plan to not come together. It’s just a matter of time, and when we get where we’re going, this world will never be the same.
