We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tye Liu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tye, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
Personally speaking, my generosity originally stems from the support of my family, enabling me to pursue what I like. They understand that it is challenging to be filmmakers at such a young age. In the entertainment industry, building up networks and reputation requires investment – time, and money. Deep digging into my inner self, I believe all the film producers have this People-pleasing Personality. We’re eager to ensure our film set is not just a workplace but a collaborative and supportive environment.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I often draw inspiration from various sources. Screenwriters, directors, and commercial video clients pitch their ideas to me, and I assist them in realizing their vision. Meanwhile, I aim to earn my share of profits at the end of the process. It’s exciting to announce that we will be producing a ReelShort mini TV series. What’s special about this one is that each episode is 1 minute long, making it easy for you to watch on the go. Many believe that the 60s soap operas will set a new trend. If you haven’t heard about ReelShort yet, check this out.
Also, I am in the process of obtaining a realtor license. In the near future, part of my job will involve assisting filmmakers in finding suitable film locations, workshops, or home studios. Additionally, my wife Ruiqi Zhao and I have initiated our own film scoring studio. We are open to various opportunities. Feel free to reach out to me for coffee chats or Zoom meetings.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities are to stay honest with yourself, act real, and continually seek improvement. There are instances where we need to express appreciation even if it means providing positive feedback to coworkers or clients about their work. Acting real means a lot to me, especially with your family also working in the film industry. Sometimes it is hard to switch your modes, but we have to overcome it. Utilizing technologies to aid in improvement is handy. In 2023, I had tutors on Preply to improve my speechcraft. In 2024, I am resuming my Japanese language study with ChatGPT Sensei
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book lists 86 useful tips to help newbies avoid common mistakes. It not only provides examples but also offers solutions. Like yesterday, I am still murmuring, ‘Oh, I was an idiot. I made the same mistake I had read about before; and I know how to fix it.” Personally, I highly recommend!”
