Meet Tyea Pettway

We were lucky to catch up with Tyea Pettway recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tyea, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I have always struggled with who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do because I wish to accomplish so much and find myself great at a lot of things. However, no one can be a master at everything and I would be wrong to to think that I could successfully and effectively be everything that I felt I was good at doing. It wouldn’t bring justice to others. In everything I do, I try to serve others. I found my purpose through realizing serving others made me happy, serving others made me get up more readily every morning, serving others is what I was created to do. It all started from the day I can recall serving my parents with the way I strive to be a pleasing child, to being a gospel dance in middle and high school, being a volunteer teachers’ aid, a mentor and student tutor in college, serving 12 years in the military thanking others for their support, helping to teach people the importance of safety throughout my career jobs, to currently creating products to help heal others skin.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am in love with creating and the arts. I am a person who thrives on being extremely occupied with tasks and activities that entertains my mind with developing interests, and as a result Soaps of Healing Properties was created. Soaps of Healing Properties is a business that focuses on healing the skin through 100% natural products. My vision behind the brand is to help people to see that they can achieve better skin and does not have to endure life with skin ailments that some of us face such as acne, oily skin, eczema, dry skin, and embarrassments from skin irritations that appear out of nowhere. I am most excited about this brand because it not only helps people, which is my passion, but it was created for a diverse group of people and it actually works! The interesting part about this brand is it was created from me asking God for something else to do! I could have never imagined that His creation would have been something that began helping my daughter at 3 months old with her severe eczema when nothing I tried helped to clear her skin, helping my husband with his dermatitis, and helping so many other people that I don’t know, with their skin needs such as healing burns, clearing face and body acne, moisturizing dry skin, relieving eczema, evening out skin tones, calming irritations from unknown breakouts, and so much more all through my customers testimonies!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Patience, knowledge of the craft I set to create, and attention to detail were the most impactful qualities and areas of knowledge in my journey of starting Soaps of Healing Properties because starting your own business with any focus is not an easy task to do, and to do that with a full time job, being a mother, being a wife, being a daughter, being a friend, and trying to still maintain a life that includes your wellbeing too, you often wonder what made you think to start anything else. For those who are early in your journey, I would say remember that nothing grows over night that is worth keeping and have a strong foundation. I would also say to remember why you started the business in the first place, because you will need small reminders along the way simply because things will not always be easy.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

One of the biggest challenges I face with Soaps of Healing Properties, is trying to convince people the product works! Having someone approach me with acne they have had for years and have tried everything they could think of from prescribed medications to over the counter remedies, and say to me nothing has worked then wants me to explain to them how my soaps, oils, and balms are going to help them, is one of the most heart aching moments I experience because most times they walk away and I know my product could have healed their skin. Could I blame any of my potential customers that have done that? Of course not! I too am someone’s customer so I understand fully. Initially, I tried resolving this challenge by speaking for the products and explaining several times what it will do and how I know and the timeline I’ve seen, but now in today’s time I let the products speak for themselves. They tell their own story through the many people the products have helped to heal and I am in love! For me it’s not about convincing people anymore that I have what they potentially need, it’s about praying that they find out in time so they can bring back their confidence and their normal self. I understand that not everyone will benefit from Soaps of Healing Properties, but for those who will, let them be guided to better skin, TOGETHER!
