We were lucky to catch up with Tykia Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tykia, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Instead of letting any haters get to me and stop me from succeeding, I simply use it as motivation. I can do anything I put my mind to. I take the criticism and use it sharpen and better my skills, I use it to push me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. I don’t let anyone control me and how I see myself and my craft.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hi! My name is Tykia and I am an aspiring nail tech in North Carolina. I am 23 and have been doing nails for almost 11 years now. I started with just doing simple designs on my natural nails until about 2015/2016 when I taught myself gel manicures. That was my niche until 2018 when I taught myself acrylic manicures. 2021, I taught myself the Gel-X method and that had been my favorite of them all. I love being a nail tech because it allows me so much creativity and allows me to try new things and challenge myself. I love outing different aspects and designs and colors together and creating sets that my clients absolutely love.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most important qualities that were impactful for me in my journey was patience, determination, and willingness. Patience is a huge factor as being a nail technician takes time. It’s not something you can rush through, it’s based a lot on taking your time. Learning new skills takes time. Learning new trends takes times. For anyone early in their journey: don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Everyone works and advances at their own pace.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My current obstacle is getting licensed. I’m trying to resolve this while still following my passion by making press ons for the time being. This allows me to still do what I love while also working to get licensed. That way I can really get to expand my business.
