Meet Tylan Corley

We were lucky to catch up with Tylan Corley recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tylan, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
There are many ways how I keep my creativity alive. I keep my creativity alive because I keep myself busy. I keep myself busy by making bracelets and I just started making bags out of Shien yarn (thick yarn). I get the idea of doing these things from Pinterest. Pinterest is a website that you can get ideas from. I’ve been making bracelets for a year, maybe. I sell my bracelets. I haven’t got the opportunity to sell my bags because I just started making them. I only have one purse that I have made but I’m going to the store to get more yarn. I am also planning on writing another book. Those are some ways I keep my creativity alive.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Tylan Joy Corley, a principal’s  list honor student who loves to lead by example. I am a Junior in Girl Scout and I love playing volleyball. I love to sing and when I grow up I want to be a surgeon and a person people look up to. I love being an entrepreneur because my mom is one, and I see how she operates everything at her daycare center.

My brand is “it’s hard being a big sister”. I have a book, pins, and bookmarks. I also have a website that is intitled Those Corley’s. I published this book when I was 7 years old during Quarantine. My mom was the one who really went through the process with me.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most important qualities that were most important to me in this journey are determination, intelligence, and confidence. I was determined because I worked hard and didn’t stop. I was intelligent because I knew what I was going to have to do. I was confident because I knew that I was going to eventually publish a book of my own. There were also some skills I needed to know to write a book. Some skills that I had to know in the process of becoming a published author is knowing how to have good customer service, knowing the process of writing a book, and knowing the process of selling the book. Those are three skills and qualities I needed to get through my journey of becoming a published author.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
A current problem that I am facing right now is getting into a private school. It has been very stressful taking tests, mock interviews, and submitting my transcripts. I am confident that I will get into the private schools but it is a lot of work on top of my current school work and extracurricular activities.  Like volleyball, Girl Scouts, practice for my school talent show, and just being a kid. I am still unsure which school I really want to attend for certain but I am sure I will decide once I take all of the tours with my parents. I am very excited to go to middle school and nervous at the same time! I don’t look at this as a problem but as a task that I have to complete.
