We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Burdic recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
Creative blocks can be really tough to get through especially when you’re working with strict deadlines but they’re a lot more common than I ever realized in the music industry. It’s never a fun thing to experience and in the moment it feels like you’ve lost your spark but when it comes down to it, the block is only as big as you allow it to be. Over time I learned how not to give it any more energy than what’s necessary because all it would do is lead me to overthink/doubt. Even just taking ten minutes away from a project (going on a walk, driving around the neighborhood, etc.) will help the flow and get things back on track. To this day I still catch myself with tunnel vision trying to make things work when they clearly aren’t but that’s when I know it’s time to disassociate for a sec and let it breath instead of beating a dead horse.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started making music for fun back in 2012 and honestly, it’s pretty hilarious now looking back at how unconventional I use to be with it all. I had no idea how to even use a DAW (digital audio workstation) so I would just download songs from YouTube, put them into movie maker, and somehow blend the songs together. Since then my music company ‘Advanced Tracks’ has come a long way and even though it can be an all consuming job at times, I truly love what I do. That being said, I’m so thrilled to be out of the busy work season and able to commit more time to my personal music projects. It’s always an exciting switch going from writing/producing for others to writing/producing for myself. This upcoming year feels especially exciting because in the past six months, I’ve had three of my songs hit a million plays on Spotify! One of my favorite upcoming projects is with Berlin based artist ‘Le Moon’ and it will be our second song together, so keep an eye out!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My advice to anyone who is early in their journey, is to trust the process, go easy on yourself, and be okay with failure. When it comes to my craft, I’ve always been a perfectionist and I think to some degree that’s good because it really just means I care about what I’m doing. That being said though, there’s a lot of reassurance in just knowing that naturally you’re going to grow/develop when you put enough time into something you care about. Over the years, I’ve found the quickest way to achieve that growth is to simply loosen up the reigns and trust that failing is a part of the process. It’s one of the hardest things you can do but it’s also one of the best things you can do when it comes to your craft. Even though at times it can feel like such a heavy weight, as soon as you shift your mindset to start thinking of failure as a productive thing, it’s a real game changer!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I always feel the most overwhelmed when I have a bunch of things that I need to get done in a day but don’t know where to start. As cliché as it sounds, physically writing out a ‘to-do list’ has helped me more than anything because once I have everything down on paper, I don’t have to waste any unnecessary brain power on remembering things I have to do. I think numbering them is also super helpful because even if you don’t do each task in the exact order you wrote them, you’ll at least have a better idea of what’s urgent and what can wait till later in the day!
