We recently connected with Tyler Dameron and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
If it makes sense, I’ve always been motivated because I loved being successful when I was a kid. I was the all-star travel baseball kid growing up. I practiced non-stop because I wanted to be the best. I was Varsity team captain in high school, played on scholarship in college, and always found myself on winning teams. Being good, felt good, and all it took was hard work? Sign me up! I had a great family life growing up. My parents owned a couple of businesses while my dad worked his normal job during the day. We went on vacations, we bought things, and I wanted to do that when I was an adult. In my first corporate job after college, I started at the bottom and I hated it. I hated it so much that I was just going to leave after a few short months and my manager decided to throw money and a promotion at me to stay. Wait, now I work hard and do good and get more money?! The harder I worked, the more respect I earned, the more I was paid, and the more responsibility I gained. I played this chapter of my life out for 10 years and ended up running my department. During the 10-year corporate stint, I got married, had a couple of kids, bought a couple of homes, and grew up. COVID grabbed a hold of my brain in 2021 and told me that I was destined to do more and to be better. The thought of “what if” consumed my brain so much that I left my comfortable job with no plan other than to be successful for my family. Luckily, I figured it how quickly and have never looked back. Growing up, I could thank my parents and my coaches for pushing me to be the best that I could be. Now I can thank my wife, my kids, and everyone around me for helping me push my limits further each and every day.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a real estate agent. Just like 7 of your closest friends! I jumped into real estate once COVID settled down and the world restored some sense of normalcy. Real estate was part of my life growing up. My dad had his license and we’d go to open houses, look at new construction communities, and hunt for investment properties. It was never really the plan, until later in life. As my corporate career in IT Operations Management started to come to an end, I knew I needed to find a way to provide for my family, while spending more time with them, but also have no limits. After lots of conversations, planning, and strategizing, I pulled the trigger and left my job to pursue my real estate license and new career. I loved the idea of being able to help people out with some of the biggest decisions they’ll ever make! I also loved the idea of not being under a microscope by the corporate big brother. I’m now in my 4th year in production, and these last 4 years have been, by far, the most rewarding and enjoyable years of my life. I have developed so many relationships with people I never would have met. I’ve heard stories I never would have heard, and I’ve gained such an appreciation for people in general. The fact that my work is getting to know people and help them find their dream home or investment property, or sell a family home, is mind blowing and I am so appreciative to be in the position I am today. I love to bring fun, education, empathy, and care to every transaction I’m involved in. I’m creating my brand on the foundation that people want to work with me, no matter what side of the transaction I’m on. I’m passionate about the educational experience for first time buyers, and hearing all the stories that people have collected as we prepare their home for sale. There is no other industry like this.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’m a knowledge seeker. Real estate is an industry where the bar to enter the field is about as low to the ground as possible. This leads to agents coming into the industry with no preparation, no training, and no knowledge. My very first transaction was a townhouse sale. After I listed it, I would get calls from agents asking about all sorts of things that I had never even heard of before. It was at that moment I knew I was going to have to go find training on my own so my clients didn’t think I was a fool. If you’re looking to get into real estate, you have to be a self starter. Be disciplined with your schedule, with your education, and take control of your future.
I listen with intent to learn. I’m a very genuine and empathetic person at the core. I’m passionate about people and I love hearing their stories. Any human being wants to be heard, regardless of the topic. I have developed the skill to listen between the words, and pick up on key words through normal conversation.
One of the biggest assets that I brought to real estate was my ability to run a business. While I didn’t own my previous company, I had a division that I ran. I was in charge of the budget, expenses, growth, staff, marketing, everything. This knowledge and power set me up for success right out of the gate when I went off on my own and it was a necessary part of my life that contributes every day to the success I have today.
The best, and worst, part of real estate is that no one has expectations of you. If you’re not disciplined and motivated, you will fail. If you have the discipline to run your day like a business owner, you will succeed. It’s simple, but it’s not easy.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I have a combination of three books that have defined the way I see my life and my future. A soul-crushing book that EVERYONE should read is “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willink. This book pushes the ideology that everyone is in charge of their own life and when you accept that, and you accept responsibility for you and what happens around you, you will succeed. The author, Jocko Willink, is a retired US Navy SEAL and you can feel the passion ooze out of each page.
When I got into real estate I immediately went on Amazon and searched for “real estate books”. I bought probably a dozen books, most were terrible and boring. I read “The Millionaire Real Estate Agent” by Gary Keller in my first couple of months and I absolutely could not stand it. I couldn’t wrap my head around the production numbers and the team building and the goals that this book outlined because I was just starting out. Well, let’s fast forward a couple of years and I’ve now read the MREA a half a dozen times when I need motivation. This book teaches you to think big and not limit your beliefs of how successful you can be. There are proven examples of how agents have been successful in the industry to replicate and it is wildly educational.
Last, but not least, is “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni. This book outlines how different people work in different ways, and are motivated by different things, and how you need to be able to adapt to different personalities to achieve your ultimate success. I read this book a long time ago and it’s one that I revisit frequently, especially when I get put in a position where I’m dealing with someone I don’t necessarily agree with. One of the worst parts about real estate is dealing with other real estate agents. As cynical as that sounds, it’s true. I have vowed to never be the real estate agent that other industry professionals don’t want to work with, or who are brought up at the dinner table for how awful they are. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team serves as a reminder that sometimes you just need to change your approach to get results.
