We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyler Freeman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyler below.
Hi Tyler, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
I believe that my self discipline is the product of a clear vision. A lot of the time, we tend to get distracted and lose motivation in things because we never defined clear goals for ourselves in that given area. Once the goals are clear, the path to success opens up and it takes self discipline to keep it open.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a personal trainer and a fashion designer. As a personal trainer, I absolutely love helping people achieve their fitness goals. It’s a special feeling knowing that you changed someone’s life through fitness. I’m constantly studying and researching the latest fitness trends and staying up to date to better serve my clients (and myself). Knowing what I know about the body, I decided to take my personal training one step further. In addition to workout programs and nutrition, I offer mindset coaching with guided meditations and personalized motivational clips to help people evolve into their Higher Self. We should aim to train our mind just as hard as we train our bodies. As a fashion designer, I love the process of creating. I started my brand in a college dorm room in 2020 with a few hoodies, t shirts, and a heat press. I wanted to go all in with my brand so I decided to quit sports and drop out of school. Many people told me I was making a bad decision but it has been the best decision I’ve ever made. My brand’s mission is to inspire others to believe in their dreams and bet on themselves, like I did. I am currently working on a fitness line for the fashionable fitness enthusiasts. I plan to debut it by Summer 2024.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say that my three most impactful skills/qualities during my journey were meditation, time creation, and the willingness to learn. My advice to anyone that is early in their journey would be to clearly define what you want. After you figure this out, you can begin to break down a plan to achieve the goal. The plan doesn’t need to be super complicated because it is bound to change throughout the action process. Once you’ve created the plan, you can begin to map out smaller goals that will keep you on course. Meditation, time creation, and the willingness to learn are necessary for moving things forward while avoiding distractions. Meditation helps with your creativity, mental clarity and cognitive ability; 5 minutes a day will be just enough to see improvements in these areas. Time creation is a synonym for “Time management”. Creating time for all of the activities that will move you forward; scheduling time blocks for activities you want to do.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I believe it’s better to go all in on your strengths rather than aiming for well roundedness. The one thing that you can never get back is your time. While I do agree that being knowledgeable in all aspects of a topic is a huge plus, the amount of time it takes to learn and fully comprehend all aspects of that topic may not be worth it in my opinion. However, I believe that building a team is crucial when you are honing in on your strengths. Building a team and delegating tasks to your team members, that are specialized in an aspect you aren’t strong in, will help move your vision forward much quicker and smoother. For instance, my strengths in business are product design, content creation, and social media marketing. My weakness was finances. I tried to learn what I needed to know but it seemed to take much longer than I needed it to. Rather than continuing to learn, I got connected with a financial advisor and we set up a plan for my financial success. Now, finances are less of a weakness because I have built a team around that aspect.
