We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Harp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Ever since I was little I have always been a hustler when it comes to getting my work done. Rather that be a school project, working on a friends music video, or working a 9-5, I have always put my full effort into my work. I believe if I put my best foot forward on whatever I am working on I will get the best outcome, because if I put the extra effort into what I am doing then I know the end product will be good. I had an old manager that helped me grow my work ethic by having sayings like “lunch is for losers” or “be the problem solver by discovering the whole in the workflow” and that stuck with me to always hustle. I always want my next project to be better than my last.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always loved to film videos with my friends back in grade school, from class projects to short films. When I attended college at Georgia State University my passion became a reality when I started to launch my own production business 24K Productions. I would do portrait and event photography and become a videographer for all forms of content. My senior year I was able to land an internship with Turner Broadcasting at the time and grew from an intern into a full time Promo editor for TNT Network. Doing this I was still working on freelance projects for my company. I’ve got to work on documentaries, music videos, commercials, and December of 2023 I edited a miniseries for Revolt TV partnership with McDonald’s for a sing/rap competition called Shoot Your Shot. I love sharing peoples stories and the developing a true emotional connection to my audience and being a editor I feel like I can do this everyday.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three things I feel that impacted my journey are: 1. Always be a hustler. I am blessed to have an opportunity to do what I love and know that all those long nights and early mornings pay off.
2. I’ve learned no matter how much you may think you know, that’s always more room to grow and learn from anyone.
3. Network, Network, Network. Even if your shy you still have to do it, and it helps you grow as a person as well as you business.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with more brands or companies that love to tell stories. If that’s a :30 second advertisement or a feature film I want to be able to work on a project with you. Non-profits that are trying to help displaced youth or even directors like Ryan Coogler or Issa Rae. You view my work on my website www.24kprod.com and chat with me by email or my instagram @24k_prod
