Meet Tyler Moake

We recently connected with Tyler Moake and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My journey towards finding my purpose in digital marketing began during my high school years. I was fortunate to be surrounded by some of the top educators in marketing and business. These early experiences ignited my interest in the field and planted the seeds for my future career.

One pivotal moment in my journey was joining the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club. I decided to join because I saw they were taking members of the club to a Utah Jazz basketball game. Little did I know that this decision to pursue a chance to attend Utah Jazz games would lead me to discover my passion for marketing. After joining FBLA, I started competing in the competitions. I competed in sports marketing and social media marketing. at the regional, state, and national levels. In 2017, I was honored to receive the highest leadership and service award from FBLA, an experience that fueled my drive to excel in this field.

After high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in marketing. However, I wasn’t entirely sure how to start. It was one of my mentors, Erick, who showed me the ropes of running Facebook ads, which became a turning point in my journey. Armed with this knowledge, I embarked on a self-driven quest to learn the skills necessary for a digital marketing career.

Balancing my college education, two part-time jobs, and my interest in digital marketing posed a significant challenge. However, my determination to succeed propelled me forward, and I eventually left my jobs to focus on my studies and marketing career.

Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to have had the guidance and mentorship of several remarkable individuals. My high school teachers, Mr. Fuller and Mr. McKay played pivotal roles, as did college professors like Dr. Mitch Murdock, Dr. Diego Alvarado-Karste, and David Pryzbyla. Networking opportunities also led me to connect with professionals such as Travis Hansen & Peter Wolfley, who introduced me to some of the top marketing experts and business leaders in Utah.

I eventually started my own digital marketing agency running Facebook ads. This is where I met Morgan McKell & Makoa Scholes. Morgan & Makoa were running a top digital marketing agency in Salt Lake and allowed me to work with and learn from them. This propelled my career and eventually helped me land a job at one of the top digital marketing agencies in Utah while continuing to freelance and help my own clientele.

As my business, clientele, and professional network expanded, so did my desire to make a positive impact on others. I realized that my true purpose lies in assisting people with their businesses, marketing endeavors, and personal goals. With this realization, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Marketing where I plan to become a researcher and professor. This path would enable me to combine my passion for marketing with my innate desire to help those around me, fostering growth and innovation in the field.

In summary, my purpose in digital marketing emerged from a blend of early exposure, mentorship, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. It’s a purpose that continues to evolve as I strive to make a meaningful impact on the industry and the lives of those I work with.”

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
What I do professionally is deeply rooted in my passion for helping others better themselves and become more creative. I find immense fulfillment in aiding individuals and businesses in accomplishing their personal and professional goals. My journey in the digital marketing realm has been a rewarding one.

I’m the founder of Moake Media, a digital marketing agency that has become my platform for making a positive impact. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with and for various marketing agencies which has allowed me to help business owners thrive in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

In recent years, my focus has primarily shifted to ad buying, where I currently manage over $500,000 in monthly ad spend, resulting in an impressive revenue generation of over $2 million. It’s a challenging responsibility that often comes with its share of stress, but it genuinely excites me when I can inform a client that their $100,000 investment in Google Ads has yielded a remarkable $500,000 return or that a $100/day campaign on Facebook has delivered a remarkable 3.5x return on ad spend over the past 14 days.

What I find most rewarding about my work is being able to share these remarkable results and witnessing the transformation in businesses as they harness the incredible power of digital marketing. Witnessing the increased brand visibility, engagement, and overall growth of my clients is incredibly gratifying.

In essence, my professional journey in digital marketing has been a remarkable one, and my commitment remains unwavering. I am dedicated to continued growth, adaptation, and innovation in this dynamic field. I’m thrilled to continue helping businesses evolve, one ad at a time.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey in digital marketing, I believe that three qualities have been most impactful in shaping my path: determination, tenaciousness, and hope. These qualities have not only been instrumental in my success but have also guided me through the inevitable challenges and uncertainties of this dynamic field.

Determination: Determination is the driving force that propelled me forward even when faced with daunting obstacles. It’s the unwavering commitment to my goals that kept me going during the late nights, the busy days, and the moments when success seemed distant. My advice to those at the beginning of their journey is to cultivate a deep sense of determination. Know that setbacks and hurdles are part of the process, but it’s your determination that will see you through. Set clear goals, remind yourself why you’re pursuing them, and stay resolute in your pursuit.

Tenaciousness: Tenaciousness is the resilience that enables you to bounce back from setbacks and learn from failures. It’s the willingness to adapt, to keep refining your approach, and to never settle for mediocrity. To those starting their journey, I emphasize the importance of tenaciousness. Understand that every challenge you face is an opportunity for growth. Embrace failure as a stepping stone to success, and always seek ways to improve and evolve in your chosen field.

Hope: Hope is the belief that your efforts will lead to a brighter future. It’s the positive outlook that fuels your determination and tenaciousness. Throughout my journey, hope has been my guiding light, reminding me that no matter how tough the road gets, there’s always potential for a better tomorrow. For those embarking on their journey, my advice is to cultivate hope. Surround yourself with positivity, seek inspiration from mentors and role models, and visualize the success you want to achieve. Let hope be your driving force, even in the face of uncertainty.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I find myself overwhelmed by the demands of work, my business, household chores, and personal goals, I rely on a systematic approach to regain control and productivity. The key to managing overwhelm, in my experience, lies in creating a well-structured to-do list and adopting strategies to tackle it effectively.

First and foremost, I begin by compiling a to-do list. This list encompasses everything I need to accomplish for work, my business, at home, and any commitments I’ve made to do that day. It also includes personal goals and tasks I had planned to achieve that day. By consolidating all these tasks in one place, I can gain clarity about the scope of my responsibilities.

Once my to-do list is complete, I take a dedicated 10-15 minutes to relax and meditate. This short break allows me to clear my mind, reduce stress, and regain focus. Meditation has proven to be a valuable tool in helping me find the mental clarity needed to tackle tasks effectively.

When I return to my list, I start with the simplest and quickest tasks. Completing these smaller items first serves a dual purpose: it reduces the list’s size, making it feel less daunting, and it provides an initial sense of accomplishment, boosting my motivation.

Next, I organize my list by prioritizing tasks based on their urgency and importance. Tasks that are both urgent and important take precedence, and I work my way down the list accordingly. This prioritization ensures that I tackle the most critical tasks first, helping to prevent last-minute rushes and undue stress.

In some cases, when the workload is particularly heavy or deadlines are looming, I’m willing to make short-term sacrifices, such as staying up late or working longer hours. However, I ensure that these sacrifices are balanced with self-care and rewards.

Rewarding myself is a crucial part of my strategy. After accomplishing a significant task or meeting a deadline, I take the time to celebrate my achievements. This can involve something as simple as enjoying a favorite treat, taking a walk, or spending quality time with my wife. These rewards motivate me and reinforce my sense of accomplishment.

In essence, my approach to managing overwhelm revolves around organization, prioritization, and self-care. By breaking tasks into manageable steps, staying focused on priorities, and rewarding myself for progress, I can effectively navigate even the busiest and most demanding periods, maintaining both productivity and well-being.
