We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

My work ethic comes from a combination of two influential experiences in my life. Growing up, my father had very high standards—he was a perfectionist, but in a way that encouraged me to always give my best. Whether it was school, chores, or how we carried ourselves, there was an emphasis on doing things thoroughly and with care. While it could be a lot of pressure at times, it also taught me the value of discipline, perseverance, and aiming for excellence in everything I do!

Then, when I entered the workforce, my first job was with a CEO who had an incredible attention to detail. He was very meticulous and expected nothing less than the best, which, at first, felt a bit overwhelming. But over time, I realized that this level of precision actually helped me improve my skills and pushed me to work more efficiently under pressure. I learned how to stay focused, manage stress, and maintain high standards no matter the situation.

Given those two incredible examples, I developed a strong work ethic that drives me to continually strive for excellence, even when the challenges seem tough! These experiences have shaped me into someone who truly values hard work, attention to detail, and continuous self-improvement.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, three key qualities have been crucial to my success: customer care and service, attention to detail, and positivity and enthusiasm. These have helped me build strong relationships, deliver high-quality results, and stay motivated through challenges.

Customer Care and Service: Truly listening to and understanding clients is the foundation of any successful business. It’s not just about solving problems—it’s about making clients feel valued and building trust.
Advice: Always put the customer first. Actively listen, ask thoughtful questions, and follow up to ensure satisfaction. Strong relationships set you apart.
Attention to Detail: The small things matter. Whether it’s a typo or a missed request, attention to detail turns good work into great work.
Advice: Build habits of careful work—double-check your output, review it, and seek feedback. It becomes second nature over time.
Positivity and Enthusiasm: The road is full of setbacks, but a positive attitude keeps you focused on solutions and drives momentum. Enthusiasm is contagious and can inspire those around you.
Advice: Stay focused on progress, not obstacles. Cultivate a positive mindset, and use challenges as opportunities to learn. Your energy will inspire others.
In short, success comes down to relationships, quality, and mindset. Prioritize your customers, pay attention to the details, and maintain a positive attitude—and the results will follow. We can do it! Keep pushing forward with passion.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was create a balance between high standards and unconditional support. My father, while very strict and demanding, instilled in me a strong work ethic and a sense of discipline. He had high expectations in everything I did—from school to how I carried myself—and that pressure pushed me to strive for excellence. While it wasn’t always easy, it taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and never settling for less than my best.

At the same time, my mother provided a loving and supportive environment where I always felt safe to fail, learn, and grow. She was the one who showed me that no matter how tough things got, I was always loved and valued. Her encouragement and belief in me gave me the confidence to take risks and pursue my goals, even when I doubted myself.

Together, they gave me the perfect combination of toughness and tenderness, which shaped me into someone who understands the importance of both pushing myself and taking care of my well-being. Their influence continues to guide me, both personally and professionally.
