Meet Tyler Straub

We recently connected with Tyler Straub and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up, my parents taught me to show up on time, always be present, and never cut any corners if you are committed to the task at hand. I took these points to heart and carried them with me through each milestone I crossed paths with. Those three life skills helped me excel as an athlete and student throughout my childhood and young adult life. I always have a voice in the back of my mind reminding me to continue to work hard and that good things will pay off. Because of this, I have carried these thoughts with me throughout my professional career. However, I believe your work ethic is also driven by the fire within yourself. How bad do you want to be successful? What do you want people to say about you when you aren’t in the same room? How can I motivate others? I believe creating the best version of yourself creates a better world.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I graduated college and quickly started my professional career as a Kansas City Royal playing in their minor league baseball system. When my professional baseball career was done, I found myself wondering what would be next for me? Up until that point I invested my entire life around a round white ball and found it hard to finally say goodbye. But little did I know it would open up some really big doors, I decided to take the next leap in my career and pursue building brands, starting business from scratch all while partnering with one of my closest childhood friends, Alex Bregman. I put my own feet to the fire and constantly challenged myself each day. If I didn’t know how to build a brand from scratch, I was going to figure it out. If I was tasked with putting together a 24 Hour gaming stream for charity within a few days, I was going to make sure it was so seamless that no one questioned I haven’t done it before. I was self taught, self motivated and wanted everything that had my name behind it to be successful. After that, it was off to the races, literally, (you want to learn everything about a horse and how, what , when and why they race, I learned that one too!)

My first task was turning an idea and love for Salsa into a store bought brand. Alex and Reagan wanted this Salsa to feel like New Mexico with a little bit of kick – fast forward to Breggy Bomb Salsa. From creating a logo and label to dealing with UPC’s (barcodes) and becoming a CPG (Consumer Product Goods) specialist I drove everything behind the scenes. We met with major grocery retailers to pitch our product for them to have the final say if all of this work was worth putting on their shelves. Our team has been able to infiltrate the Salsa world by attacking 100 + H-E-B locations, all Houston surrounding area Kroger locations and even the home of the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park. Our Salsa has been a staple in many Houston homes and we have exciting news coming up soon!

My day to day is far from ordinary but I love what I do. From social media, memorabilia, horse racing, health + fitness, travel accommodations to assisting in the overall success for Alex on and off the field my days are always full of fun new adventures.

All of these experiences have led me to amazing places and even better people. I think back to the last time I walked off a field myself, to all of the MLB fields I have been lucky enough to visit, just goes to show you how funny life works.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have taken a piece of advice from Maverick Carter who said “You don’t have to always be the smartest in the room, you just need to know how to find the answer” Because of this, I have learned to become comfortable in high pressure situations.

Think before you speak. I observe a lot which makes me come across quiet at times, but in reality I am digesting all information around me. This has helped me have appropriate reactions or suggestions when dealing with business decisions and everyday life.

Don’t give up. You sometimes feel like you get your teeth kicked in from time to time as an Entrepreneur but remind yourself that there is light at the end of the tunnel with hard work and consistency.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

1. Every time you come in contact with someone provide them a gift, this can be something tangible, something verbal or an act of service. Small gestures impact people in big ways.
2. What you put out into the world you will get back.
3. Learning that some things that don’t work out are just not meant to be yours.
