Meet Tynika Smith

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tynika Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Tynika, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
It was easy for me to Identify what I loved to do and what made me happy, alot of people said its my calling, its my purpose. I noticed that I like to spend alot of my time talking about the homeless, seeing what I can do next, crownfunding for items they could use to survive as well as important topics. I love to teach and talk about things I’ve learned first hand from speaking to individuals that are homeless. Reflecting on what energizes me, and what positive impact I have on them and others that want to join.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hello, my name is Tynika Smith, I’m a mother of 4 wonderful kids, I’m also better known as Ms. T. I founded my nonprofit eight years ago, but officially introduced it to the world in 2023. I wanted people to know me first to understand that everything I do comes from the heart.

My mission is to serve and uplift the homeless population. Every other week, I provide a home-cooked meal, hygiene bags, clothing, snacks, and helpful information to those in need.

Throughout the year, I host special events to remind people of their worth and dignity. On Mother’s Day, I distribute gift bags filled with love and encouragement a gesture that has brought smiles, hugs, and even tears of gratitude. This event was featured on two different news outlets.

On Father’s Day, we celebrate with a community barbecue, offering free haircuts, hot meals, and hygiene kits specifically for men, because they are definitely over looked. Seeing their joy after a fresh cut and hearing several say they were inspired to apply for jobs truly reminds me why I do this work.

During the holidays, I prepare about 100 plus hot meals on Thanksgiving and another 100 plus on Christmas Day. On Christmas, I also distribute stockings or gift bags filled with cologne/perfume samples, small treats, stuffed animals, and kind notes, these small gestures make a big difference.

Every act, every meal, and every smile is about one thing: LETTING PEOPLE KNOW THEY MATTER.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would have to say Empathy which plays a big role because to be able to understand the feelings of people that are homeless is crucial for me because I have to build that trust and rapport.

Beung Non-Judgmental you have to treat every person with respect and dignity, regardless of their circumstances.

Being able to Communicate clearly and effectively is needed for understanding needs and explaining options.

The advice I have is to be true to yourself if its in your heart you’ll come with these qualities already so it will be a breeze for you to continue or start. Them smiling is the best feeling.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking to collaborate with people and companies who share the same passion for helping others. Over time, I’ve been blessed to receive incredible support from several local businesses and so many Richfield & Bloomington Mn, commUNITY members I couldn’t begin to start.

Sandy’s Tavern very own Kevin in Richfield, MN, has been an amazing donor— Kevin provided the entire meal for Christmas last year and even donated gift cards for me to raffle off during a major city event.

Golden Tobacco, also in Richfield, MN, and its owner Kareem, consistently donates tobacco products to support the community.

The Gumbo Lady LLC, owned by Shalonda, is another incredible supporter — she donates delicious dishes like gumbo and wings whenever I ask.

And Dominique, the Center Director at Cedar Kindercare, generously allows me to host donation drives, back-to-school events, and even large cooking sessions at the facility.

This is ONLY a few people, businesses.

I’m truly grateful for each of these partnerships. Their continued support makes it possible for me to reach more people in need and reminds me how powerful commUNITY can be when we work together. If anyone wants to connect they can reach me on my website Thhinc.org, or via email [email protected]
