Meet Tyra Garcia

We were lucky to catch up with Tyra Garcia recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyra, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I found my purpose and became a Functional Nutritionist due to a deeply personal journey with the limitations of the standard American diet and medical system.

Despite adhering to the conventional norms—exercising regularly and maintaining what seemed like a healthy diet—I faced persistent health issues and struggled to manage my weight. Frustrated by the lack of progress and answers from traditional approaches, I sought solutions that dug deeper into the root causes of my health problems.

This personal struggle sparked my passion for Functional Nutrition. It led me to explore the interconnectedness of dietary choices, lifestyle, and individual health. I realized that a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t effective and began advocating for a more personalized, holistic understanding of nutrition and wellness.

Through my experience, I was inspired to guide others in unraveling the complex relationship between diet, lifestyle, health, and well-being, aiming to help them achieve lasting, individualized solutions that traditional medicine, and the standard American diet, often fails to provide.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

When I started my journey as a nutritionist, I was determined to focus on holistic health rather than weight loss. I believed that weight loss would naturally follow as a side effect of bringing the body into balance. Building a strong, healthy foundation for my clients has always been my priority. However, I soon realized that about 90% of my clients were seeking help with weight loss. So, I decided to embrace this goal and focus on achieving healthy, sustainable weight loss by balancing the body.

As a functional nutritionist, I specialize in helping clients improve their health and well-being through personalized nutrition strategies. By understanding each client’s unique needs and health conditions, I create tailored nutrition plans that support their body’s healing processes, enhance their overall wellness, and promote sustainable weight loss.

My approach goes beyond conventional dietary advice, incorporating holistic methods to address the root causes of health issues and empower clients to achieve lasting, positive changes.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Qualities in a great Functional Nutritionist would be someone who is passionate about helping people, has empathy, and excellent listening skills to deliver exceptional care. Passion fuels their ongoing education and enthusiasm, ensuring they stay updated on the latest research and approaches. Empathy allows them to connect deeply with clients, understanding their unique struggles and motivations. Listening skills enable them to gather critical information, tailor personalized nutrition plans, and provide the support needed for sustainable lifestyle changes. Together, these qualities foster trust and collaboration, empowering clients to achieve optimal health.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

I was born into a family of healers, where the art of well-being was woven into our daily lives. My grandfather a skilled chiropractor, dedicated his life to helping others find relief. My mom taught me the importance of cooking with fresh, healthy ingredients. Through their influence, I learned that true healing comes from a holistic approach, embracing both tradition and natural methods.
