We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tysheira Maddox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tysheira below.
Hi Tysheira, so happy to have you on the platform with us today and excited to chat about your lessons and insights. Our ability to make good decisions can massively impact our lives, careers and relationships and so it would be very helpful to hear about how you built your decision-making skills.
I am the oldest daughter and also the only child – that may go over a lot of heads, haha! But because of that, I had to grow up pretty quickly. This positioned me to learn how to make decisions, use good judgment, and be confident. I was responsible for things around the home and helping my mother with my younger sister. I don’t regret it, because it shaped me to be the woman I am today. I enjoyed being a big sister even though the experiences came with some cons. My decision-making skills still to this day are pretty, A1. I am highly intuitive so that affords me the ability to not be afraid of challenges. It has helped me to be a pretty decisive person. If I wasn’t exposed to responsibility, leadership, and discipline at a young age, I am not sure if I would have great decision-making skills today.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a licensed clinical social worker, author, and non-profit founder. I provide therapy to individuals in late adolescence, millennials, and gen z – some gen-x folks creep in there too! I am a personal development coach, in which I love helping black women in their 20s level up personally and professionally. I am a soon-to-be 2x self-published author. My first book, “For The Unguided Twenty-Something Year-Old: Advice, Lessons Learned and Inspiration” was released in February 2022. It highlights multiple streams of income tips that will help you with making additional income, identifying your purpose, preparing professionally after college, setting boundaries, and the importance of taking risks. I love writing for emerging adults because I feel that they need the most guidance. Navigating adulthood is not easy!
My second book that will be released this Fall is titled, “For The Unguided Twenty-Something Year-Old: The Professional Playbook. In this book, we talk all about how to navigate the professional world. Covering topics like professional etiquette, the power of transferrable skills, and navigating gap years. You do not want to miss the release of this book!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, having resilience, grit, and discipline has been the most impactful on my journey. Life is hard, especially when you are healing and bouncing back from low moments.
A lot of my hardships gave me tough skin, and working with different populations of people during their low moments provided tons of experience. I don’t think without these three qualities: resilience, grit, and discipline, I would have gotten through college/grad school, navigating b.s at jobs, and building my businesses. My advice for individuals will be to stay laser-focused on your mission in life. You have to be hungry every single day for your purpose, if not you will be climbing the ladder for someone else’s purpose. When life throws curve balls, learn how to jump with force, duck, and roll – that’s how you will get through life.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client would be an individual, preferably between the ages of 18-35, who is struggling with the trajectory of their personal and professional life, desiring healthy relationships (personal and professional), and looking to get out of their own way – dismantle limiting beliefs that stop them from living the life they truly desire. We all have had moments when we faced the ceiling at night envisioning what we want our lives to be. I am a firm believer that we can have it! It may not be easy to get, but we can indeed have it.
