Meet Tyshera W.

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyshera W. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyshera, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I developed my ability to take risks during a time when life wasn’t aligning with the expectations I had set for myself. There’s often this idea that once you graduate from college, or even pursue a graduate degree, opportunities will fall into place. But after completing my master’s program, I quickly realized that wasn’t always the case. Despite my education, I kept getting turned away from jobs because I didn’t have the three or more years of experience they were looking for. It was frustrating, and for a while, it felt like I was stuck at the starting line all over again.

In 2024, after graduating from graduate school, I completed several graphic design internships. It was during those internships that I began teaching myself how to create bold, eye-catching visuals and started to really build confidence in my skills. That experience opened my eyes to the possibility of creating something of my own. In January 2025, I officially launched my graphic design business, and it has been one of the most significant and rewarding risks I’ve taken.

Starting my business gave me the opportunity to create the kind of work I enjoy while also allowing me to grow professionally and creatively. I didn’t want to wait around for a company to give me a chance, I decided to give myself one. Since launching, I’ve had to make a series of bold decisions to push my brand forward. Taking those risks has played a huge role in how quickly my business has grown. Through this journey, I’ve learned that betting on yourself isn’t just necessary, it’s powerful.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Tyshera, I’m a 25-year-old creative from Baltimore, Maryland. I earned my Masters degree in Media in May 2024 and originally planned to focus on social media management. But along the way, I discovered my passion for graphic design. Once I started creating graphics, something clicked, and I knew this was the path I wanted to take. In January 2025, I officially launched my design business, Tyshera Designs Lab Co.

Since launching, I’ve worked with a variety of business owners to help grow their brands through eye-catching visuals and impactful storytelling. I’ve also collaborated with companies like Zenjoy and community organizations in Baltimore, including SHE (Shaping Health Equity), which focuses on Black women’s wellness and advocacy. My client work has reached across Maryland, North Carolina, and Atlanta, and I’m continuing to expand. I specialize in business cards, booking flyers, cover art, YouTube graphics, event presentations, sports flyers, and more.

In June, I expanded my business by launching Tyshera Designs Shop on Etsy, where I offer digital flyer templates and other customizable designs. What excites me most about what I do is seeing my clients’ reactions. I believe my designs reflect who I am, creative, vibrant, and full of joy. It means a lot to know I’m helping people bring their visions to life, whether it’s for their business, an event, or a personal project.

Looking ahead, I plan to grow my business by offering physical prints of my work. From event flyers to business cards and brochures, I want to become a trusted source for all graphic design needs. Whether digital or printed, my goal is to create high-quality visuals & quick turnaround times that leave a lasting impression and support people’s ideas in a meaningful way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three of the most important qualities that made a real impact on my journey are consistency, having a strong work ethic, and creativity.

Consistency is what keeps everything moving forward. Even on the days when things felt slow or uncertain, showing up for my brand and putting in the work helped me stay visible and build momentum. It also builds trust with your audience and future clients, even before you’ve worked with them.

Having a great work ethic has also been a major factor. It shows how dedicated you are and how much you’re willing to pour into what you’re building. When people see the time, energy, and passion behind what you do, they’re more likely to support it and believe in it too.

And of course, creativity. In this field, creativity is what makes your work stand out. It helps define your brand’s voice and personality. It’s what makes people stop scrolling and take notice. Your creativity can be the reason someone chooses your services over someone else’s, so don’t be afraid to show it off.

For anyone just starting out, my biggest piece of advice is to stop waiting for everything to be perfect before you begin. If you have an idea, go for it. You can fine-tune and add to it as you grow. Don’t let the fear of other people’s opinions hold you back either. The right people will support you, and the rest doesn’t matter. Most importantly, stay consistent. Consistency is what creates progress, builds credibility, and helps you grow in a way that’s long-lasting. It might not be easy every day, but it will definitely be worth it.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes, I’m definitely open to partnering and collaborating with others. Right now, I’m especially interested in working with cities in the DMV area and surrounding regions that can help expand the visibility of my brand. A key goal of mine is to collaborate with my own city, Baltimore, by designing flyers and marketing materials for local government initiatives, fundraisers, and well-known community organizations. I believe working with local institutions would not only be a meaningful experience, but also allow me to showcase the range and versatility of my design work.

Looking ahead, I’m also excited about collaborating on a larger scale. I would love to partner with major commercial brands like Nike, Apple, Skims, or Fashion Nova, as well as create music cover art for well-known artists and creatives in the entertainment industry.
