Meet Tyson Green

We were lucky to catch up with Tyson Green recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tyson, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Well, despite me having anxiety, which can feel like a burden some days, I like to start my day by absorbing information that sets the bar in a positive light. I may listen to a podcast that’s empowering or read a positive, informative, or motivating self-help book, so that the first pieces of information that my mind takes to before the day starts are things that make me happier. For example, most people wake up, and the first thing they do is scroll through social media and absorb the information in their news feed, with the majority of it likely being people moaning, complaining, or posting negative videos or pictures. not realising that the information makes them start the day feeling sad or thinking negative thoughts. That being said, you can use social media to your advantage and only follow accounts that will empower you and keep you in a positive mindset.

But the real reason I’ve grown to overcome my anxiety and persisted through challenges, is that I spoke about it and decided to get help and therapy, which initially felt scarier than the first time I went on operations as a young soldier.

But fast-forwarding to where I am now, the tools my therapist taught me have kept me grounded ever since.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a creative with a passion for spreading mental health awareness in the form of film and children’s books.

I released my first short film which i wrote, directed and produced independently on YouTube, which is called ‘Trigger-ed’ and is based on experiences with mental health. ‘Trigger-ed’ most recently won an award at Kent mental Health and Wellbeing awards, which is organised by MIND Mental Health Charity, which is UK’s leading mental health charity.

Recently, I finalized my first children’s book, “Doc Green and the Mind Monsters.” This self-help adventure book narrates the story of Doc Green as she embarks on a journey into the human brain to provide assistance and aid to the mind monsters within, helping them better understand themselves and their mental health. Writing a children’s book was a new endeavor for me and far from easy, but with diligent research and support from online forums, my book is now finally completed.

You might be wondering why I chose to write a children’s book. Well, I recall my own childhood experiences, where I exhibited signs and symptoms of anxiety, yet had no understanding of what it was or how to manage it. Given that children develop a love for reading books at an early age, what better way to blend adventure and raise awareness about mental health in a fun and easily digestible format than through a children’s book.

My children’s book will be available soon via my website tysongreenofficial.com or you can follow me and keep an eye my Instagram for updates @tyson_g_official.

In summary, as someone who has personally endured the challenges of mental health for numerous years, my goal is to ensure that as many people as possible possess a fundamental understanding of mental health. This knowledge equips them to identify the signs and symptoms in themselves, their loved ones, friends, or colleagues at work. Recognising these signs can be crucial in potentially saving a life, as it paves the way for open conversations that guide individuals towards seeking professional help before it becomes too late.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Experiences impart valuable lessons about both your identity and your desired path, often accompanied by inevitable conflicts and difficulties. However, it’s essential not to be disheartened, as it’s within these challenges that personal growth flourishes. These situations indicate that you’re either learning a valuable lesson or stepping out of your comfort zone and into what’s known as the “stretch zone.” Like a muscle, growth requires stretching to become larger and stronger.

Therefore, maintain a positive attitude and unwavering focus in the face of life’s trials. Consider these challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. If something is particularly challenging or stressful, ask yourself what lesson it might be trying to impart.

And, above all, remember that in life, there are no true losses—only lessons.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The valuable lesson my mother instilled in me is the importance of making the best of what you have. While I was growing up, we didn’t always enjoy the most favorable circumstances, but my mother consistently did her utmost to piece things together when possible.

This lesson has been a guiding principle in my life, helping me maintain a positive perspective even when faced with challenging situations that might otherwise seem overwhelming.
