Meet Tzu-Ying (Naomi) Chan

We recently connected with Tzu-Ying (Naomi) Chan and have shared our conversation below.

Tzu-Ying (Naomi), so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My confidence is deeply rooted in a lifelong journey of continuous experimentation and adaptation within the realm of art. As a curator, I’ve refined my expertise through the curation of exhibitions spanning various themes and venues, which has allowed me to amass specialized knowledge. Furthermore, the process of curating exhibitions has provided me with invaluable opportunities to expand my network and cultivate connections with a diverse array of organizations, museums, galleries, and individuals within the art community.

My journey of accumulating experience began during my university years, where I actively participated in numerous exhibitions. Graduating from the Department of Plastic Arts at Da-Yeh University, I was exposed to a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines, including metalwork, woodworking, installations, painting, ceramics, and more. This comprehensive curriculum equipped me with a nuanced understanding of different mediums and artistic techniques.

Whether assuming the role of an artist or curator, I possess the ability to offer profound insights into artworks, thanks to my multifaceted approach to art and exhibition curation. What sets me apart from other curators is my unique methodology: I approach each exhibition with the perspective and skills of an artist, meticulously considering details such as lighting selection and artwork arrangement. These decisions are informed by my background and extensive practical experience.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a curator, writer, and multidisciplinary artist based in the vibrant metropolis of New York City. My artistic journey has been diverse, with a focus on spotlighting contemporary concerns such as humanity’s relationship with the natural world and the interplay between national boundaries and cultural identities.

Among the pivotal experiences that have indelibly shaped my artistic sensitivities was my time being an exchange student in Brazil back in 2013. Venturing from Taiwan to Brazil alone to pursue my academics opened my eyes to the richness of diverse cultures, identities, dynamics, cuisines, and languages. This experience fundamentally reshaped my outlook on life, emphasizing the importance of human diversity and cultural richness.

This transformative period was integral to my decision to move to New York City. Immersing myself in this cultural melting pot made me realize that to become an outstanding curator and artist, I needed an open mindset and broad understanding of the world’s cultural tapestry. True appreciation of the arts necessitates an exploration of diverse cultural narratives. By deepening my understanding of global cultures, I aim to uncover the unique allure of art and then share it with a wide audience. These efforts deepen my comprehension of artistic expression and reinforce my belief in art’s borderless power to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers, fostering unity and appreciation for diversity.

Moreover, I leverage art’s communicative power to highlight awareness, empathy and mutual respect across cultural differences, contributing to a more inclusive and harmonious society.

In 2024, I had the distinct honor of being invited to lead an exclusive calligraphy workshop during the Lunar New Year festivities. Held on February 3rd at the esteemed Advantage Academy in New York, these workshops provided a platform for me to share my passion and expertise in the art of calligraphy. Guiding students, parents, and faculty through timeless craft of traditional couplet calligraphy, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of cultural exchange.

Each brushstroke reflected centuries-old tradition and finesse, immersing participants into the heart of calligraphy culture. It was deeply fulfilling to see genuine engagement from students and teachers, knowing that I had imparted a deeper understanding and appreciation for this cherished art form.

Beyond showcasing Eastern traditions, the workshops served as a vibrant cultural exchange. As attendees delved into the intricacies of calligraphy, new connections were forged, and a shared appreciation for Taiwanese culture blossomed.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My profound appreciation for engaging in conversations has truly been a cornerstone of my career as a curator. Through active listening and empathy, I’ve gleaned invaluable insights into the experiences of others, which are indispensable for my dual roles as a curator and an artist. This ability to connect with others, coupled with my proficiency in research, has been instrumental in my work. It allows me to delve deeply into the context of artworks and the narratives of artists, enriching the exhibitions I curate by fostering deeper connections with the audience and amplifying the significance of the displayed works.
Empathy, in particular, plays a crucial role in my interactions with artists. It enables me to grasp their emotions and perspectives, forging genuine connections that empower me to effectively convey the essence of their work. This fosters a deeper appreciation among viewers and facilitates meaningful engagement with art.

Lastly, perseverance has been the driving force behind my success in the ever-changing and challenging art realm. By remaining steadfast in the face of obstacles and uncertainties, I’ve navigated through the dynamic landscape of the art world, seizing opportunities for growth and advancement.

By combining these qualities, I’ve deepened my understanding of art, established meaningful connections with artists and audiences, and successfully navigated the complexities of the art world.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I often arrange a short trip for myself, allowing me to briefly distance myself from the anxieties and worries of life. During these journeys, I avoid scheduling too many activities, instead opting to slow down and reflect on the current challenges. I approach things from different perspectives, believing that there is not just one solution to every problem or dilemma.
